Join the Design Thinking Experience Program!

In January 2020, the Innovation Hub and the Centre for Learning, Leadership & Culture will launch a Design Thinking Experience Program for students and staff. Building on the success of the Innovation Hub’s student-exclusive design thinking bootcamps, this program will continue to address challenges in the student experience at UofT while providing participants with hands-on training in design thinking; moreover, it will bring staff and students together to encourage dialogue and broaden perspectives on what is possible at UofT.

By joining the ten-week program, you’ll work on a project to improve student life. You’ll collect student stories through empathy-based methods like interviews, discussions, and observations, and you’ll uncover insights into unmet needs and prototype potential solutions. At the same time, you’ll learn and practice design thinking and qualitative research. The skills you’ll gain will be useful on your resume and in the workplace, and the team you’ll meet will be a great place to build connections. Our teams will have both staff and students, so you’ll get a chance to see how UofT functions ‘behind the curtain’ and inspire change.

By the end of this program, you’ll learn and gain hands-on experience with:

  • Various models of design thinking
  • Empathy & design thinking
  • Equity & ethics in design thinking
  • Data collection methods including interviews, observations & alternative methods
  • Transcription & data analysis
  • Ideation & prototyping
  • Testing & implementation
  • Reporting & presenting design-based research projects

The program runs from January 9 to March 19. Commitment is intensive: there will be a mandatory two-hour workshop each week, plus three hours of additional work. Because we work on genuine projects with deliverables and deadlines, we ask that participants commit to full attendance and participation.

Places are limited in this pilot program. Applications are open now! Click here to apply by December 6.

We also invite you to our orientation sessions to learn more and ask questions.
