Libraries at the University of Toronto

The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library. ~ Albert Einstein

Before ending my first year, I went around campus asking students about where they spend the maximum amount of time in a day and well, you guessed right, it’s at the libraries. Have you ever wondered about how many libraries we have? A total of 44 libraries spread across three campuses! There are more than 2 million digital books and journals, up to 18,000 visitors to Robarts Library daily, and 12 million volumes available in over 341 languages. Interesting, isn’t it? All you need to get into these 44 libraries is your TCard.

Some of my favourite libraries at the St. George campus are:

1. University College Library

Library Hours: Monday-Thursday: 9am-9pm, Friday: 9am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday 1pm-5pm.

The University College Library stands number one on my list of favourites, mainly because of its natural lighting, glass paintings, and study environment. This library also offers free scanning of documents onto your USB device.

2. OISE Library

Library Hours: Monday-Thursday: 8:45am-6pm, Friday: 8:45am-5pm, Saturday: 10am to 5pm, closed on Sundays.

OISE Library is the perfect place to work since you’re mostly surrounded with grad school students, who make for a very good working environment. It’s also convenient since OISE has easy access to the St. George TTC station.

3. Sigmund Samuel Library

The Sigmund Samuel Library at Gerstein Science Information Centre has some of the most organized study spaces with ample natural light.

4. Engineering & Computer Science Library

The Engineering and Computer Science Library at the Sandford Fleming Building has some of the most innovative people you will ever meet on campus.

5. E.J. Pratt Library

Library Hours: Monday-Friday: 9am-4:45pm, closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Located away from most buildings, the E.J. Pratt Library at Victoria College has spacious study rooms that can be booked and a calm working environment with lots of space.

6. Robarts Library

Library Hours: Monday-Friday: 8:30am-11pm, Saturday: 9am-10pm, Sunday: 10am-10pm

The John P. Robarts Library contains the single largest collection of the University of Toronto Libraries. This library also has a separate work space, known as Robarts Commons, that is open 24 hours — yes, you read that right! Robarts has a major fan following among other libraries, too!

These are some of my favourite libraries. Learn more about other libraries at U of T, such as location, books, and study spaces.
