Julia Smeed, Innovation Hub Project Leader

As we look forward to the new school year, the Innovation Hub is excited to assemble a team for our upcoming and continuing projects. We want to offer our potential team members the opportunity to both contribute to the university and learn new skills: we’re looking for dedicated students who are interested in improving campus life by focusing on student needs, and we’re also offering those students training and hands-on practice in human-centred design. We hope to put together a diverse team that enjoys the challenges of our work!

Design Research Team Lead (CLN #146244)—1 vacancy

The Design Research Team Lead leads a design thinking project for the Innovation Hub; the project will involve working with campus partners to better support students in a particular area. They will oversee data collection and analysis using an ethnographic and empathy-based approach, write reports to inform their campus partner about their insights and recommendations, and prototype potential solutions. They will lead a team of volunteers who support the project.

Design Research Team Lead for Student Life Project (CLN #146241)—1 vacancy

The Design Research Team Lead, Student Life, will lead a team of student researchers who use design thinking to understand the U of T student experience and ultimately inform the Division of Student Life’s strategic planning process. The Team Lead will work directly with the Project Manager and other Student Life staff to engage students in the development of the new Student Life strategic plan. They will oversee data collection and analysis using an ethnographic and empathy-based approach, write reports to tell the Division of Student Life about their insights and recommendations, and prototype potential solutions. The Team Lead may work with volunteers who support the project.

Design Research Assistant (CLN #146248)—4 vacancies

The Design Research Assistant works with a research team to conduct a design thinking project for the Innovation Hub, with the ultimate goal of improving the student experience in a specific area. They will use an ethnographic and empathy-based approach to oversee data collection and analysis, write reports to present the insights they uncover, make recommendations, and prototype potential solutions. They will work with volunteers who support the project.

Design Research Assistant for Transforming the Instructional Landscape (CLN #146237)—4 vacancies

The Design Research Assistant, Transforming the Instructional Landscape, participates in the design thinking team for the Transforming the Instructional Landscape project—an initiative to re-design classrooms on campus. They will oversee data collection and analysis using an ethnographic and empathy-based approach, write reports to tell our partners and other university members about their insights and recommendations, and prototype potential solutions. They will work with volunteers who support the project.

Design Research Assistant for the Presidential & Provostial Taskforce on Student Mental Health (CLN #149704)—4 vacancies

The Design Research Assistant, Taskforce on Student Mental Health, will help the Taskforce obtain a better understanding of students’ experiences of mental health services on campus. They will contribute to the student consultation process by planning feedback events to engage students in dialogues about the current state of mental health services and possible improvements, and derive insights from these dialogues to support potential recommendations.  Students with lived experience and/or academic work in the area of mental health and mental illness are encouraged to apply.

Data Analysis Team Lead (CLN #146249)—1 vacancy

The Data Analysis Team Lead oversees data entry and analysis for all Innovation Hub projects. They will support the Innovation Hub’s research teams in studying the student experience by organizing and analyzing research data, making recommendations and testing potential solutions, and contributing to final reports. They will lead a team of volunteers who support the project.

Data Analysis Assistant (CLN #146245)—4 vacancies

The Data Analysis Assistant supports the Innovation Hub’s research by analyzing the data collected by our research teams and identifying the challenges faced by U of T students and those who support them. They will transcribe and code qualitative data, use Dedoose software to organize data, and work with the team to prepare reports that explain their insights to university stakeholders.

Writer (CLN #146243)—1 vacancy

The Innovation Hub Writer contributes to writing strategy at the Innovation Hub, working with other team members to ensure that all written communications adhere to a polished, professional, and engaging format. They will write and edit pieces for the Innovation Hub, including blog posts, website content, reports, and presentations.
