Stories from a Distance encourages students to find community through conversation. Students can expect to be welcome into a virtual space (over Zoom) created by and for students looking to invest in meaningful connections within their campus community over the Summer.
Here’s what this coming week will look like:
ResourceXchange: Let’s talk about local finds!
Monday, July 13 at 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Hosted by Gillian & Carly
This week, the Stories from a Distance community is coming together on Zoom to discover and share some of our favourite local finds and places. Over this 1-hour Zoom call, we will be discussing our favourite local shops and place of your city, and how can we support BIPOC-owned businesses to build a better community. We hope this week’s efforts to cultivate our virtual community also bring fresh ideas to your next outings in distance!

Virtual Fireside Chats: IHUB x HartHouse: Go Stargazing! What’s your zodiac sign?
Tuesday, July 14 at 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Hosted by Vatsal, Psalm & Hart House Ambassadors Chantelle & Varsha
This week, in collaboration with students from the Harthouse, our U of T student community is engaging in some virtual stargazing in addition to their virtual bonfire. What’s your zodiac sign? Do you know anything about astronomy? How have legends, fables, and archetypes mapped out in the stars shaped cultural norms and identity formations? The I-Hub student team invites everyone from the U of T community to sit back and gather around our virtual bonfire every Tuesday for meaningful conversations, interactive virtual activities, and connection building. Bring your favourite summer drink, snacks, or lunch to these casual, 1-hour virtual hangouts and share your stories with both new and old friends.

Virtual Cafe: Mindful Drawing
Wednesday, July 15 at 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Hosted by Vatsal & Carly
This week, the Stories from a Distance community is coming together on Zoom for some collective art-making to engage in artistic forms of decompressing. Over this 1-hour Zoom call, we will be drawing as a way to ground ourselves, decompress, and stop scrolling for a moment. Doodlers, artists, and scribblers are all welcome. We hope this week’s efforts to cultivate our virtual community also bring about art you would be proud to hang on your fridge!

Peer Support: Checking in & Managing Summer Classes
Thursday, July 16 at 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Hosted by Vatsal & Psalm
Community check-in time: how are your summer classes going? The Innovation Hub is inviting you to another casual Thursday hangout to talk about how we’re all handling our summer courses. Whether you’ve got an embarrassing BB Collaborate story, strategies for standing out in your virtual tutorials, or frustrations to share about how you have adjusted, we want to hear them all. You can expect anything from a casual virtual hangout, guided discussions, or carefree socializing activities. You’ll be welcomed into a virtual space that is inclusive, empathetic, and empowering. These zoom sessions are safe spaces for U of T community members looking for confidential and non-judgmental peer support. Sessions will be moderated and guided by I-Hub staff, and students trained in active-listening and group facilitation. In all of our sessions, participation is encouraged but never required!
