While at U of T we have the ability to take electives outside of our own field of study, which can be a great opportunity to learn more about yourself and others around the world. If you’re an incoming student…
Dealing with Homesickness as an International Student
At random times during the day, I find myself thinking about home. Back home, it's a different lifestyle and many things are different about Toronto and Lagos, but there are a few similarities that make me feel a bit closer…
Mapping Out My Future ?️
Studying abroad is something I have always dreamed of doing. I love travelling and new places, but there’s something different about living in another place, even temporarily. You can’t gain the true experiences and the culture that you would get…
Exploring Edinburgh
Now that I officially have been in Edinburgh for a month, I have gathered many thoughts about living here that I would like to share. Already, I feel quite at home here. It is very fulfilling to have made it…
U of T’s first Afro-Caribbean dance workshop: 10/10 would go again and again
This past Monday, Move U and U of T’s Black Students’ Association hosted the university’s first Afro-Caribbean dance workshop. It was one of many highlights of my four years at U of T. Seriously.
The hour-and-a-half long workshop was a total blast! It was led by Arsenio Andrade, who was born and trained in Cuba and has performed internationally, and accompanied by the wonderful drumming talent of Richard “Popcorn” Cumberbatch who has been playing Caribbean indigenous drums since the age of 11. There was a great turnout and every single person seemed to be having the time of their lives – I know I was.

An Endless Tug-of-War: Being a Diasporic Asian
My Neighbour Totoro. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Char siu bao. Maple syrup pancakes.
Red pockets. Christmas trees.
As a child, I never questioned why my life was a mix of Canadian and Chinese culture. It had always seemed natural to participate in each culture’s respective traditions and indulge in its entertainment and food. I didn’t realize that this was partially due to the fact that I was a diasporic Asian.
On A Magic Bus
One of the great things about university is the endless opportunity to experience, learn, and engage with new perspectives and worldviews. Last Saturday I went on a Multi-Faith Centre hosted event, a Bus Tour of Houses of Worship in Toronto…
On Treasures and Good Ways: First Nations House @ U of T
There is something about First Nations House at U of T that keeps pulling me back to its colourful walls and its people. When I walk in, I feel at home. Last week, I met with the wonderful Lee Maracle. This…
Black History Month: Important for Everyone
It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but I don’t know all that much about Black History Month. I remember learning about it and celebrating it in school when I was younger. But since then, I’ve found that I’ve had fewer…
