International Scholarship Programs (2.1)

Between 2018 and 2023, the University of Toronto awarded 2,047 substantial international undergraduate scholarships, fostering a diverse and globally engaged student body from 128 countries. In the 2022-23 academic year alone, 555 scholarships were granted to students representing 88 countries, further solidifying the university’s commitment to academic excellence and inclusivity.

The impact of these scholarships is illustrated through the initiatives of students like Tamara Altarac and Ana Laura Noda González, a Pearson Scholar. As second-year undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science, they co-founded MealCare, a non-profit organization dedicated to decreasing food waste and combating food insecurity in Canada. The initiative, operating in eight cities across Ontario andQuebec, has delivered more than 50,000 meals to those in need during the global pandemic, showcasing the tangible difference scholarship recipients can make in their communities.

The university’s commitment to addressing critical issues is further exemplified by Peter Ma, a third-year math and physics student and Laidlaw Scholar. His passion for scientific exploration led him to become the youngest member of an international team dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Ma’s groundbreaking work, published in Nature Astronomy, reflects the intellectual depth and curiosity nurtured by the University of Toronto.

The University of Toronto’s international scholarships are not merely financial aid; they are catalysts for positive change, fostering a community of global leaders committed to making a difference.
