3 Ways I Keep Balanced

It can be so hard to keep up a good work-life balance as a student. Often, it can be the case that we flip between being hyper-productive and getting nothing done, because we burn ourselves out. The key to preventing that burnout is BALANCE, which can be difficult to justify sometimes, but it will undoubtedly improve your life and will also make you a better student!

It can be so hard to keep up a good work-life balance as a student. Often, it can be the case that we flip between being hyper productive and getting nothing done because we burn ourselves out. The key to preventing that burnout is BALANCE, which can be difficult to justify sometimes but it will undoubtedly improve your life and your abilities as a student!

1. Work as a marathon, not a sprint

I always try (key word TRY) to start my assignments at least a couple weeks early. This allows you to have days where you don't need to work on them if you need a break, and it allows room for error if something comes up close to the deadline.

I also personally work much better if I can have a task to check off each day, and so I try to split big assignments into smaller chunks which are more manageable.

2. Have scheduled hobbies

When you don't have extracurriculars and activities that are scheduled into your week, it can be hard to set time aside for them. If you can, sign up for at least one thing every week that you do outside of school just for yourself, and it will make it much easier to commit to showing up regularly.

There are tons of opportunities for scheduled activities on campus; from clubs to exercise classes and intramural sports, there is something for everyone.

I, personally, am a club exec for VicDance, take a weekly diving class, and volunteer at an archive. These hobbies can be whatever you want and some of them might even add to your resume, but they should be things you enjoy and that make you feel your best!

3. Take breaks, even when you feel like you don't deserve them

Breaks are essential for your brain function. I know it can be hard to justify taking time for yourself, especially when school gets busy and you can't always check everything off your to-do list. That being said, if you don't take breaks, you won't be doing your best work.

If you still want to feel productive while taking time away from school work, you can use the time to clean, meal prep, exercise, call your family, or hang out with friends. I think the best breaks are ones that give you time away from the screen and take your mind off whatever you've been working on so that you can put your all into your work when you come back to it.

Hope this helps you put your best foot forward this exams season, and best of luck with finals!
