Supporting Graduate Success: Research Insights for the Centre for Graduate Mentorship & Supervision (GSMS)

Graduate supervision and mentorship are the backbone of a graduate student’s experience at the University of Toronto. To gain a deeper understanding of the graduate student experience, the Centre for Graduate Mentorship and Supervision (CGMS) partnered with the Innovation Hub to conduct comprehensive research, including virtual feedback sessions and in-depth analysis of mentorship and supervision experiences of graduate students. These feedback sessions aimed to inform best practices for the upcoming Centre for Graduate Mentorship and Supervision (CGMS) in supporting student needs and creating programming.

What is the graduate student experience of supervision and mentorship at U of T?

We conducted feedback sessions using semi-structured, open-ended interview techniques aimed at allowing our participants to share their experiences and through which, using qualitative insight-driven analysis, we found shared core needs. All data about participants was anonymized, and from our data, we developed a holistic understanding of the participants' experiences of supervision and mentorship in the graduate journey.
