Recently, I’ve been listening to podcasts as a means of staying focused and exploring new things. For those of you interested, U of T has its own collection of podcasts which I’ve only found out recently. There seem to be three main podcasts that have been growing from this time apart and each has their own take on sharing stories.
- The New Normal with Maydianne Andrade - greater student involvement and perspective of the pandemic on our lives
- What's Next? with Vivek Goel - news and important information bitesize podcast from the university
- View to the U with Carla DeMarco - research in creative and scientific fields for a more lighthearted set of engaging talks
Depending on the podcast they are available on a choice of platforms. The website to the University of Toronto Podcast page where this info comes from is here >
The New Normal, with Maydianne Andrade
These podcasts look forward to the future and discussion are aimed at prompting thoughts about important topics in the current separated world we live in. "Hosted by Professor Maydianne Andrade, a Canada Research Chair in Integrative Behavioural Ecology and U of T Scarborough’s vice-dean of faculty affairs and equity", I've spent some time listening to the opinion and viewpoints of some undergraduate students talking about various life scenarios that U of T students face. In particular, I listened to an international students' voice in an episode about international perspectives. And the one common life goal for students from Asia and South America was making it to North America and achieving another step closer to the 'North American dream'. Hearing that impact, as such a crucial focal point for so many of my peers, I'm enjoying learning more about other perspectives and stories.
What’s Next?, with Vivek Goel
Vivek Goel, a professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and a renowned public health expert and founding head of Public Health Ontario, offers listeners timely and reliable information about the COVID-19 pandemic in What’s Next?
I remember seeing What's Next? occasionally on the website when it first began I think over a year ago and I quite enjoyed listening to the short extracts of news - they are only a few minutes in length. Here's an episode from the series on YouTube:
View to the U, with Carla DeMarco
U of T Mississauga faculty members from a range of disciplines illuminate some of the inner workings of the science labs and enlighten the social sciences and humanities hubs in interviews with Carla DeMarco of the UTM Research Office.
If you are looking for a more creative or scientific discussion, take a listen to the View to the U, with Carla DeMarco and you can find the podcast below. The most recent is 'Season 6: Adventures in Research'. These talks are more casual and a contrast to the pandemic based news around us.
This season we are focusing on research storytelling and seeking out your best academic anecdote from the long list of researchers at U of T Mississauga's 17 departments (or as many as we can pack in to a season of podcasts!).
