OUR HIRING PROCESS
The Innovation Hub’s toolkit for what to expect and help to prepare at every stage.
PREPARING YOUR REFERENCES
What it is
If you’re one of our final candidates, we will most likely ask you to provide us with a list of references. Typically, we ask for three to four professional references who can speak to your abilities in relevant contexts. Generally, we prefer to speak to at least two references who have supervised you in some capacity. References can be supervisors from work or volunteer positions, professors, club leaders, etc. We'll reach out to your references via email or phone.
What we’re looking for
The best references can speak authentically about your growth, challenges you've overcome, how you work in teams, and what makes you unique.
Tips for success
- Give your references a heads-up early and let them know you're applying, what stage you're at, and when they might be contacted.
- Provide your references context and share the job description and remind them of specific projects you worked on together or skills you demonstrated.
- Diversify your references and include people from different contexts (academic, work, volunteer) to show your range and consistency.
- Confirm their contact information to ensure it is current and accurate.
