THE APPLICATION & SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE
What it is
Your initial application is the first step in joining our team. We look for both a resume and cover letter for every role where we ask that you share your background, experiences, and what draws you to the Innovation Hub. Think of it as your chance to introduce yourself and show us how you connect with our mission of tackling wicked problems that matter to students. Our creative roles require a portfolio with examples of work related to the specific job.
Screening Questionnaire
Depending on the role, the application may have a screening questionnaire. This short survey is intended to help us learn more about you, confirm the logistical details of the role, and give you the opportunity to tell us more about you and your qualifications. Generally, we estimate the survey will take you about 20-30 minutes to complete.
What we’re looking for
We're looking for students who are curious, collaborative, and passionate about making a difference in the student experience. You don't need to have it all figured out—we value a growth mindset over perfectionism. Show us your authentic self, your unique perspectives, and how your experiences (academic, extracurricular, or personal) have shaped your approach to problem-solving and working with others. We want to read your cover letter and really get a feel for who you are and why you want to work here. When it comes to the screening questionnaire, there are no right or wrong answers; we just want to get to know you better.
We urge you to use your authentic voice when completing the application form and avoid the use of generative AI in formulating your answers – even if your grammar isn’t perfect, we want to read your unique voice in your responses.
Tips for success
- Apply for only one role – if we think you’re a fit for another current opening, we’ll consider you automatically.
- Have your U of T email, UTORid, and student # ready.
- Save your full application as one PDF with your cover letter followed by your resume. Where applicable, link your portfolio to your application. Avoid submitting multiple files.
- Tailor your resume and cover letter – tell us more about you, why you want to work at the iHub in this role, and what experiences you have that make you qualified.
- Be genuine and think about how your strengths fit the role you’re applying for; we want to hear your authentic voice, not what you think we want to hear. Use your personal writing style in your cover letter and questionnaire responses. Our hiring team screen out folks who use generative AI to write responses as we really want to get to know the human behind the form.
- Communicate clearly and help us see how your experiences align with the role you're applying for. You don’t have to have a ton of experience; you just need to show us how the experience you do have is transferable (even if it is academic or course-related).
- Show your passion, and tell us what excites you about design thinking, student-centered work, and the Innovation Hub's mission.
- Proofread carefully before you submit to ensure your application reads the way you want it to. We don’t want small errors to distract us from getting to know you.
- Think ahead with your school and personal schedule for the year in mind.
- Be honest and transparent in your responses.
