Accessibility at Convocation

Creating an inclusive community for graduating students is becoming increasingly important. To this end, the Innovation Hub collaborated with the University of Toronto Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Officer to conduct a gap analysis of the accessibility issues with convocation. We collected data on the full convocation process—from the application to graduate until the ceremony—as experienced by students with lived experience of disability.

How do we create an accessible graduating space for students?

Key aspects of the convocation experience include:

  1. Getting information and communicating to register, buy tickets, and find your way;
  2. Interacting with customer service to get gowns and photographs, parking, participating in the ceremony and satellite events, bringing support persons, using medical aids that require an electrical source; and
  3. Navigating and experiencing the Convocation Hall environment.
