Walking through Robarts last week, I noticed something that I hadn't seen since last summer: a line at the TCard office. As orientation week approaches, the TCard office only gets busier and busier. If you've waited until now to get your first TCard, you might end up wondering what makes it worth lining up and waiting. Trust me, it's more than a little blue card that lets you take out books and pay for Starbucks, it's actually a tiny little pass for free and cheap stuff throughout the city!
Food
Insomnia: Craving a late night meal that doesn't come in a wrapper? Insomnia is for you. This Annex restuarant serves up international comfort food until 2am everyday of the week. Students get 20% off their meal, except during weekends and holiday brunches.
Future Bistro: You can only eat Tim Horton's bagels and yogurt for so long before you crave some real breakfast. Future's Bistro serves breakfast from 8am to Midnight, and offers 20% off when you show your TCard. Sweet!
El Furniture Warehouse: Though not technically a student dicscount, El Furny is too cheap to leave off this list. Every item of food on the menu is $5, meaning that you can go out to dinner with your friends without breaking bank. If you're looking for a drink with your meal, be careful, though the food may be cheap, the drinks aren't. El Furniture Warehouse has two locations, one in The Annex and another on Queen St West.
Metro: Restaurants are great, but shopping for your own food is far cheaper. The Metro at Bloor and Spadina offers 10% off to U of T students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Shopping
Art supplies: Whether you need drafting supplies for class, or are hopelessly addicted to gel pens like I am, Toronto's art supply stores got you covered. Midico in the annex offers 10% off with your student card, Curry's also offers 10%, and DeSerres offers 10% off as well.
Shopper's Drugmart: You can't live in Toronto and not end up shopping at Shopper's. From toiletries to makeup to snacks, the Shoppers at Bloor & Spadina and Bloor & Bedford offer 20% off on Thursdays when you show your TCard.
Fun
Royal Ontario Museum: As I highlighted in a previous post, the ROM offers free admission to students on Tuesdays. Since the ROM is practically part of the U of T campus, you have no excuse not to go.
Art Gallery of Ontario: Looking for inspiration? The AGO offers free admission to students after 3pm on Wednesdays. The AGO is only a short walk down Beverly Street, so it's definitely worth checking out after class.
Ripley's Aquarium of Canada: Ripley's is one of my favourite attractions in the city, but general admission is definitely out of my price range. But you don't need to break the bank to hang out with sharks and pet sting rays! The UTSU offers discounted tickets through their office.
Check out the UTSU's entertainment discounts page for even more admission deals, from Medieval Times to Wonderland.
