This is your sign to get *LinkedIn* 👩🏾‍💻

LinkedIn was one of those things I never really understand what the purpose was but had it because everyone else I knew also had it 😂 but recently I got the chance to attend a LinkedIn workshop by Career Exploration and Education and learned SO much!! Without further ado, here are a few things I learned!

Meme of Bernie Sanders saying I am once again asking you to create a LinkedIn account

Career Path

I can’t be the only one that’s wondering, “what in the world can I actually do with my degree?!!” Well, one of the great things about LinkedIn is that you can search topics and keywords that are related to your area of study and find people that graduated from that area and see what they are during in their career. This can help you better understand what your career pathway could look like and the options that are available to you.

Networking

Following my first point, another aspect of LinkedIn is you can use it as a method to network! As you search for people that are working in a field that interests you, don’t be afraid to reach out to them! In my experience people are generally open to chatting with you about their journeys as well and to give advice regarding things they would have have done differently etc. Don’t know how to start the conversation? Try something like this:

Hello!

My name is _________ and I am studying ________ at the University of Toronto. I am interested in _______ field and I would love to learn more about the work you do as well as about your career path so far. I'm available to chat over a quick coffee or Zoom meeting. Let me know what works best.

Kind regards, ____________

PS. There’s a good chance you may not hear from some individuals but that totally okay!

Last but not least…

Staying informed!

Along with connecting with individuals that are in the field that you aspire to be in, you can also engage with companies and organizations that inspire you and that you’d like to work at. This can help you stay informed with what’s new in the field and stay engaged! Plus many companies and organizations post about career opportunities such as internships, co-op and jobs!

So if you’ve been looking for a sign to get LinkedIn, THIS IS YOUR SIGN!!
