Working at the Innovation Hub

Are you curious about what we do at the Innovation Hub? On Thursday, August 7th, from 12-1 PM, we hosted a one-hour session where Julia Allworth (Manager, Innovation Projects) and Ruth Rodrigues (Research Lead) shared what it's like to work at the Innovation Hub and what roles were available for the Fall-Winter 2025-26 Work-Study Term. There were opportunities to ask questions, learn about upcoming roles, and understand the importance of our work on a deeper level. The event was open to all U of T students & U of T staff supporting students in Work-Study hiring. Watch the recording to learn more!

The University of Toronto deeply values its relationship with student leaders in its governance processes. In partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost Students (OVPS), the Innovation Hub seeks to better understand the needs of student leaders as they commence and carry out executive positions. In particular, the university’s Governing Council formally recognizes five primary representative student bodies, collectively representing all U of T students: Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students; Scarborough Campus Students’ Union; University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union; University of Toronto Mississauga Students’ Union; University of Toronto Students’ Union. Civil discourse between the university and leaders from these representative organizations ensures that topics that matter to the tri-campus student body are discussed and addressed. This project will explore how OVPS and the broader university community can best support student leaders build the momentum needed to create positive change on campus.

The Documentary Assistant works on all aspects of Innovation Hub’s design thinking projects aimed at bringing stories to life through audiovisual storytelling. Responsibilities of the team include participant recruitment, logistical planning for audiovisual projects such as documentaries, podcasts, and other audiovisual projects, provide videography and recording support, and work collaboratively with other professionals involved in the projects such as videographers and other audiovisual professionals.

This project seeks to feature the journeys of six neurodivergent students to understand their different experiences at the university. Working in partnership, Accessibility Services and the Innovation Hub seek to share the individual stories of six neurodivergent students in a documentary short that will be shared with the university community. Documentary participants will share their stories through video diaries, voiceovers, and vlogs of their day-to-day lives, providing commentary on their unique experiences and journeys. By highlighting the different paths of neurodivergent students, the goal is to inspire conversations about more inclusive practices to support diverse students across the University of Toronto.

This project seeks to feature stories of six globally minded students who have become changemakers through transformative experiences learning abroad. Students who, through learning in new and unfamiliar parts of the world, gained confidence, overcame barriers, broadened their perspectives, and ultimately created impact in areas such as healthcare, climate change, technology, social justice initiatives, and beyond. Working in partnership, the Centre for International Experience and the Innovation Hub seek to share the stories of international changemakers in a documentary short that will be shared with the university community. Documentary participants will share their stories through video diaries, voiceovers, and vlogs of their lives, providing commentary on their unique experiences and journeys. By highlighting the impact that international students make on a global scale, the goal is to inspire conversations about emerging leaders who discover their voices and capacity to create change that truly matters to global communities.

The Graphic Designer & Communications Assistant creates all the digital communications content for the Innovation Hub. The role includes original graphic designs for reports, presentations, and digital communications channels. The role may also include website design, blog writing, photography, and videography. The Graphic Designer & Communications Assistant works under the direction of the Communications & Operations Lead, bringing to life content produced within project teams with visual imagery, media, and infographics. This role involves creating professional reports and presentations of design research data, iconography, promotional materials, blog posts, website content, and more. The role may also entail special projects, developing creative materials outside of the scope of design research projects. An important note: at the Innovation Hub we have a full graphic design process where all of our visuals are original designs. We start with mood boards and move to sketching and eventually digitizing using Adobe Illustrator. Experience or familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and a portfolio with graphic designs are required for this role.

Working with existing data is an important aspect of this role.
