Icebreaker
About
Icebreaker is a video conferencing platform that provides for making meaningful connections while mimicking real-life gatherings. It promotes community building through online events where you can spark new connections, and have fun together — no matter where you are.
The Takeaway: Icebreaker is a great way to help others to get to know each other with guided conversation games. One standout feature lies in Icebreaker matching system which tracks who you've match with across every Icebreaker event in order to prioritize new connections. You can customize card prompts or simply use one of the templates. Icebreaker is a relatively new platform, however, so you may encounter some technical issues.
Pros and Cons Set the stage - Icebreaker allows for a lively real-time group chat. You can watch YouTube videos together. Have a speaker — or eight — and address the group live. Connect your people - You can kick off games that match participants 1-on-1 over video. Prompt cards make it easy to connect and share, whether you’re total strangers or longtime friends. Free for up to 40 participants Participants can follow up with their matches after the event via the chat feature, which will forward an email if recipient leaves the site Can't control when people enter an event - anyone who has a link can join at any time Sign in through Google only, users are forced to create a Google account if they don't already have one Can't change display name without changing Google account name, hard to signify pronouns or make any account specific changes Games are limited to the flip-a-card format Icebreaker requires that you join with video which could be an accessibility concern Pricing Given the pandemic and current need for extended social distancing, Icebreaker has temporarily decided to offer free access. Currently, there is a maximum of 40 participants on the free tier, but the team is planning to extend the offering to events up to 200 people in the near term. In the meantime, if you are planning to run an event above 40 people just let the Icebreaker team know beforehand and they can get it taken care of! Accessibility Icebreaker does not offer much in terms of accessibility support information, but keep in mind the service requires users to join with video. To access Icebreaker from an unsupported country, consider using one of the UofT supported VPNs if allowed according to your local law. Security
