University of Toronto Wireless Internet
U of T has a campus wide Wireless Network – basically anywhere on the St. George campus, you can connect to the U of T wireless network.
There are two network SSIDs you might see when connecting: Utorwin and UofT. Utorwin is an older network that is being phased out, so in this post I’ll show you how to connect to the UofT network. By the way, SSID is just the name of the network you will see in your computer’s wireless network manager.
Connecting to UofT on Windows 8
You will need to verify your Utorid – go to https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/ and select verify under Problems with your Utorid? Obviously, you will need a computer that already has Internet to do this (you might try your friend’s computer, or a computer at a U of T library). If you don’t have a Utorid and you are a student, get to the TCard office at Robarts ASAP!
Next, find the Settings charm – move your mouse to the top right or left corner of the screen so the menu pops out, then click Settings. There are six options near the bottom, click the Network one. Select the UofT network, and click Connect.
Enter your Utorid and password …
Windows 8 might give you a warning message about server identity – click Connect.
If you get any other errors just click Connect or OK. Then find the settings Charm and return to the Network settings bar. You should be Connected to the UofT network.
Next we want to save our credentials (Utorid and password) so we don’t have to enter it every time we connect. Right click on the UofT network, and click View Connection Properties.
A properties window will open in Desktop mode. From there, click Advanced Settings, and you will get to this window:
Select User Authentication under Specify Authentication Mode. Click Save Credentials. The following window opens, where you should enter your Utorid and password.
Click OK, and OK again until you have exited from the Properties window. Open a web browser and navigate to your favourite website to test your connection!
What about other Operating Systems?
So you aren’t running Windows 8? No problem – check out the Information Commons website for info on how to connect to UofT on another OS: http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/content/20/704/en/wireless-access.html
Scroll down to the UofT section, and select your operating system. There isn’t one for Linux, because it’s not supported by the Info Commons help desk, but if you are using Linux I’m assuming you can probably figure it out!
