Congratulations! It’s time to start fresh with the brand new school-year once again! (Sorry, Alice Cooper lied.) By now you know all the basics, like where to eat, how to find your way around campus and who to ask for help. But remember, U of T is all about the unique experience you create for yourself. And remember, fortune favours the bold, so be bold! You have to be an active participant in making your life awesome, so be vigilant in seeking opportunities to do (or discover) the things that you love.
Good luck!

Perfecting time-management skills is one of the biggest challenges of university. Because there is less class-time and more independent work in university classes, it can be easy to leave work until the last minute. But unless you want to spend the night holed-up in Robarts all-night study space trying to cram a semester’s readings into your head, it’s best to develop more disciplined work habits early! Try visiting the Academic Success Centre (now with drop-in hours at Robarts and Gerstein Library). They can help you develop organization skills, study skills, stress-management skills and all of those other skills you need to be at the top of your class.
30 Days 30 Ways (27): Get Your Textbooks September 3, 2011

As most savvy university students know, it’s important to wait until after your first week of classes to purchase your textbooks. Because professors often update their reading-lists from year to year, buying your books too early can ultimately be a huge waste of money. The U of T Bookstore will have most of the books that you need (if your professors has stocked the books elsewhere, they’ll tell you in class!), and there’s often an opportunity to save some dough by either purchasing used, or renting your books for the semester.

Are you interested in travelling the world while working on your undergraduate degree? Try visiting the Centre for International Experience and talking to some of the fine folks in the Global Lounge. To qualify for an exchange program, you must have completed your first four credits at U of T at the time of application. After that, almost everyone is eligible to apply. Although you might not get your first choice of location, there are a million options for students suffering from a little bit of wanderlust!
30 Days 30 Ways (25): ASK someone September 1, 2011

If you see someone wearing one of these snazzy fashion accessories on campus, it means that they’re part of the ASKme program. For the next few weeks, a bunch of U of T pros (a.k.a. staff, faculty and well-seasoned students) will be donning the accessories so that new (and returning) students know where to go for any University-related information they might need! Remember the old proverb: “There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out.” So if you have a question (even if you think it’s a silly question), just ASK someone!
