{"id":5834,"date":"2010-07-15T12:35:19","date_gmt":"2010-07-15T17:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/UpbeaT\/?p=5834"},"modified":"2010-07-15T12:35:19","modified_gmt":"2010-07-15T17:35:19","slug":"the-kids-are-alright","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2010\/07\/15\/the-kids-are-alright\/","title":{"rendered":"The kids are alright!"},"content":{"rendered":"Hello student lifers!\n\nHere\u2019s the thing about campus in the summer: it looks<\/em> the same, it\u00a0sounds<\/em> the same, but it just doesn\u2019t\u00a0feel<\/em> the same.\n\nThis being my third summer on campus-ish (first summer I lived on campus, second I took a course, and this summer I\u2019m working here), I\u2019ve been puzzling over the difference for quite some time. Things are closed earlier, granted. There are fewer (though still cool) events<\/a><\/strong> going on. There\u2019s a slightly different crop of students, and younger teachers. But beyond that, there\u2019s still something amiss, and I think I\u2019ve finally figured out what it is.\n\nBabies, babies, babies!\n\nOkay, not actual babies, but there are so many young\u2019uns about campus these days. Maybe it\u2019s just me, but I find that when you live and breathe the bubble<\/a><\/strong> you lose immediate contact with a whole number of demographics. That is, you talk almost exclusively to fellow students (mainly educated folk between the ages of 18 and 22), and within that mostly people in your program - people that share a lot of the same interests and aspirations, and then a few extremely intelligent older folk.\n\nIn fact, the U of T campus population is, relatively speaking, pretty homogeneous\u2026 but no longer. In the summer, thanks to things like Camp U of T<\/strong> and programs held at the school<\/a><\/strong>, kids are putting the \u201ccamp\u201d into campus\u2026 I\u2019m sorry. Couldn\u2019t help it.\n\nSo who are these kids?\nCamp U of T<\/a><\/strong> is a part of U of T\u2019s Faculty of Phys. Ed, offering programming for a wide range of ages, and employment opportunities for U of T students in the process.\n\nThe DEEP Summer Academy<\/strong> is organized by U of T Engineering, and accepts high schoolers from across the world, also hiring students as instructors and residence staff<\/a><\/strong>.\n\nNow seeing small children using my stress-grounds as their playground is a bit unnerving, but these DEEP young adults and their high school bravado are absolutely charming. I have to hold myself back from going up to them and saying, \u201cHey, you, it\u2019ll get better!\u201d Mainly because I\u2019ve been told I look about 15 and they would probably drag me to the Camp U of T counsellors as a wayward camper.\n\n- Liz","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
