{"id":35775,"date":"2018-10-03T15:51:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T19:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=35775"},"modified":"2018-10-03T15:51:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T19:51:43","slug":"gaming-daily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2018\/10\/03\/gaming-daily\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaming daily"},"content":{"rendered":"Navigating the sweet middle ground\u00a0between supplementing free time with video games and falling into gaming addiction can be tough to do.\r\n\r\nGaming had an adverse effect on my academics in high school, so I haven't really regularly gamed since 11th grade.\r\n\r\nThere's a game console that had been driving me nuts since it's announcement in late 2016, but I held off on buying it for the sake of my grades. \"I've just started university, I'm not going to let this trivial waste of time destroy my efforts,\" a hard-working first year thought to himself.\r\n\r\nThis past summer, the temptation grew too strong, and I decided to get the Nintendo Switch.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_35776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35776\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_20181003_010804.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35776\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_20181003_010804-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_20181003_010804-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_20181003_010804-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_20181003_010804-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My baby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nIt's currently October, and by now I've had many gaming sessions. To my\u00a0surprise, I'm finding that my schoolwork is actually going more smoothly than\u00a0last year, when gaming was not a part of the equation.\r\n\r\n<strong>Mental Framing<\/strong>\r\n\r\nI find it helpful to imagine a gaming session as a reward instead of a \"grind\" like I used to.\r\n\r\nIf I complete homework or an essay on time, or maybe even get a decent grade back once in a while (lol I'm not crying), I allow myself to play games for a solid hour.\u00a0I have a lot of homework, so this actually happens quite frequently.\r\n\r\n<strong>Addiction<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThis is undeniably a problem for a lot of people, as it used to be for myself.\r\n\r\nSome ways I've managed to avoid becoming addicted to my games are:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Detaching myself from the burning desire to level up, and instead simply enjoying video games for what they are.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Playing in planned blocks of time (say, an hour) and sticking to it.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Cool down<\/strong>\r\n\r\nMost importantly, gaming has really been a great way for me to decompress after a busy school and work schedule.\r\n\r\nSo far, this is the least mentally taxing year of university that I've had.
