{"id":27730,"date":"2016-03-01T14:19:30","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T19:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=27730"},"modified":"2016-03-01T14:19:30","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T19:19:30","slug":"an-afternoon-at-walter-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2016\/03\/01\/an-afternoon-at-walter-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"An Afternoon at Walter Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Every now and again, during my midday campus dashes, I\u2019ll cut through Philosopher\u2019s Walk behind Trinity College which opens up on Bloor Street at the north\u00a0end.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_27746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27746\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/explore2-3-011-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27746\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/explore2-3-011-300x225-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Philosopher\u2019s Walk during the summer is a sight for sore eyes. photo courtesy of previous blogger Cynthia\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Philosopher\u2019s Walk during the summer is a sight for sore eyes.<br \/>photo courtesy of previous blogger Cynthia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">And every so often, as I\u2019m huffing and puffing my way across the winding paths, I\u2019ll hear distant echoes of what sounds like a piano playing or snippets of lilting tunes coming from somewhere far away.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">The source of the sounds was a short-lived mystery- tucked away amidst the leafy trees in Philosopher\u2019s Walk are the University of Toronto\u2019s esteemed Faculty of Music facilities, which I spent last Thursday afternoon getting acquainted with.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">No, scratch that. Let me say-<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">I spent last Thursday at the <i>opera<\/i>. (how sophisticated does that sound??)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Seriously, though. Last week, thanks to a surprising bout of productivity, I found myself browsing the U of T events calendar to look for an interesting way to spend some free time and came across the Thursdays at Noon program held by the Faculty of Music.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-26-at-8.06.38-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27741\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-26-at-8.06.38-PM-1024x564.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-26 at 8.06.38 PM\" width=\"504\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Every Thursday at 12 PM, students and staff from the Faculty of Music put on a performance for the audience to enjoy and last week- the show was \u2018An Opera Spotlight: A preview of the opera area\u2019s production of Benjamin Britten\u2019s <i>Paul Bunyan<\/i>.\u2019<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-8.29.26-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27742\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-8.29.26-PM-300x212.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 8.29.26 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-8.29.26-PM-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-8.29.26-PM-425x300.png 425w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-8.29.26-PM.png 593w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Mind you, I didn\u2019t have the slightest clue who Benjamin Britten was, nor what to expect from an opera performance (please excuse my ignorance, music majors!) but I thought it might be an enriching way to spend a rather grey Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">The performance was being held in Walter Hall, in the Edward Johnson building shown in the photograph.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image7-e1456814860720.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27737\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image7-e1456814860720-297x300.png\" alt=\"image7\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image7-e1456814860720-297x300.png 297w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image7-e1456814860720.png 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">I made my way down there at a quarter to, spending a little time navigating and exploring a building I\u2019d never been inside before. Edward Johnson Building is a cosy one, with warm red bricks featured heavily in the interiors and the sounds of peoples\u2019 laughter echoing in the hallways. It is based on the story of- you guessed it- Paul Bunyan, a mythical giant lumberjack from North American folklore, who curiously enough, is never seen in the performance- only heard.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">There are several other characters who take centre stage in the show, including Tiny, Paul\u2019s daughter, several cooks, farmers, lumberjacks and a medley of animals, each with their own little quirks and oddities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_27747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27747\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-01-at-12.43.50-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27747\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-01-at-12.43.50-AM-300x204.png\" alt=\"some of the talented cast of #UofTPaulBunyan\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-01-at-12.43.50-AM-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-01-at-12.43.50-AM-440x300.png 440w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-01-at-12.43.50-AM.png 691w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">some of the talented cast of #UofTPaulBunyan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">The performance was both amusing with its comedic lyrics and awe-inspiring; I was taken aback by the cast\u2019s vocal abilities. I\u2019d never heard a piece quite like that before. Music and song in the part of the world that I come from take on a very different form, so this was my first experience with a piece of this kind and I enjoyed it immensely.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image9.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27739\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image9-300x167.jpeg\" alt=\"image9\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image9-300x167.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image9-500x279.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image9.jpeg 639w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">There was something so whimsical about sitting in a warm, cosy music hall, listening to the \u2018cooks\u2019 passionately sing about soup and beans (you heard me) right after a very serious political science lecture on realism and conflict.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">I also enjoyed the fact that in between the musical pieces, we were given a bit of background and trivia about them and the authors.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image41.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27734\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image41-300x248.jpeg\" alt=\"image4\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image41-300x248.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image41-1024x847.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2016\/02\/image41-363x300.jpeg 363w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>f<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Overall, I had a lovely afternoon at Walter Hall and left the Faculty of Music with a buzzing and refreshed mind.
