{"id":22993,"date":"2015-01-26T08:46:37","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T13:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=22993"},"modified":"2015-01-26T08:46:37","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T13:46:37","slug":"a-night-at-the-uoft-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2015\/01\/26\/a-night-at-the-uoft-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"A Night at the (UofT) Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I can\u2019t count the amount of times that I\u2019ve walked by a poster advertising a new play on campus, and said \u201coh, I\u2019m going to go to that!\u201d\u00a0 <strong>If you\u2019ve followed my blog posts for a while now, this won\u2019t come as much of a surprise to you; I am the <i>queen <\/i>of \u00a0wanting to get involved in something, and then never actually doing it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So this week when my friend invited me to come and see her in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinity.utoronto.ca\/visit\/bookings\/git\/dramatic_society.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity College Dramatic Society<\/a>\u2019s performance of the Twelve Angry Jurors - I knew I had to stick to my promise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I decided to take this as an excuse to have a night out, a \u201cnight at the theatre\u201d so to say.\u00a0 It\u2019s only three weeks into the semester and I already feel as if I\u2019m clocking more hours at Robarts than in my own bedroom.\u00a0 <strong>I figured this was the perfect excuse to take a well deserved break.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22994\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image12-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of me at a table at Gabbie's bar with a plate of delicious food in front of me\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image12-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image12-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image12-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We started our night up on Bloor at Gabby\u2019s Bar &amp; Girl to grab a quick bite before the performance, which started at 8pm.\u00a0 Pulled pork and fries may not be the classiest of pre-theatre meals, but hey - I\u2019m on a student budget here (and it was delicious).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22995\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"a picture of my delicious food - a pulled pork sandwich and fries\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We got to the theatre early to purchase tickets from the door and get our seats in the George Ignatieff Theatre. The stage itself was small, but the theatre filled up quickly with family members and friends of the performers, and a couple campus reporters as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/IMG_2100.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22996\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/IMG_2100-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"a picture of my theatre program and ticket. The program reads &quot;TCDS presents the twelve angry jurors, with a picture of a screaming head in which the eyes are covered by the numbers 1-12\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/IMG_2100-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/IMG_2100-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/IMG_2100-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When the play began I was immediately captivated.<\/strong> I hadn\u2019t done much research about the play before hand, but the general synopsis involves a group of Jurors arguing over the innocence of a man accused of killing his father.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The entire play takes place on the same set, with no more than 13 characters on stage at one time.\u00a0 It was intense and dramatic, with the perfect amount of comic relief.\u00a0 The characters delve into topics such as immigration, racism, prejudice, and the idea of \u201creasonable doubt\u201d.\u00a0 Although you never see the accused man, or any characters other than the jurors and a security guard, through the\u00a0discussion you feel as if you have an clear picture of the entire trial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22997\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image1-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"a picture of the performance happening on stage. The 12 characters are sitting in chairs around a large table - on character is standing up addressing the group.\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image1-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image1-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image1-2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The actors themselves portrayed their characters skillfully, shedding tears at some points and genuine smiles at others. Although the play itself was only an hour, when it was over I felt as if I had known these characters all my life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image3-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-22998\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image3-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"the actors in the play lined up for the final curtain call\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image3-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image3-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/01\/image3-2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the play was over we waited in the lobby to see our friend, then walked home discussing everything we had just seen.\u00a0 <strong>The best part of seeing a play, movie, or any theatre production, is the ability it has to take you away<\/strong>.\u00a0 For a given amount of time it transports you into another storyline where the problems of your world don\u2019t seem to matter anymore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\">So I\u2019ve ticked something off my campus bucket list, and managed to find a new favourite past-time in the process.\u00a0 <strong>I would love to hear your experiences with campus productions, including any plays that I <i>have to <\/i>see.
