You\u2019ve heard it from your teachers, from leaders at your orientation, even from your heart. It\u2019s in the same league of common knowledge that tells you not to write \u201cLOL WTF\u201d to conclude your paper on neoliberalism.\r\n\r\n<strong>This knowledge I\u2019m talking about is of course, is the awareness that your grades will drop in your first year of university.<\/strong>\u00a0I really could\u2019ve just said that at the beginning, but I\u2019m a big fan of ridiculously unnecessary explanations.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/education\/high-school-grade-inflation-balloon-ready-to-pop\/article10452197\/\">It is estimated that the average first year university student will see a 10% drop in marks from their last year in high school.<\/a>\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ainokami.com\/other\/zoom.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"207\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">My face when. via: http:\/\/ainokami.com\/other\/zoom.gif<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nI was consistently reminded of this in high school, and I always thought it was bogus. First of all\u00a0\u2013\u00a0teacher, you know my name, not my story. Second of all, I thought you guys were supposed to be the wind beneath my wings \u2013 why won\u2019t you let me fly?\r\n\r\nWell they were right. I\u2019m glad they prepared me. Preparation was the key to my sanity.\u00a0<strong>Grade deflation happens to almost everybody. Maybe some people won\u2019t drop as far as others, but it is unrealistic to assume you can keep up the same momentum that you did in the comfort of high school.\r\n<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/pmmukjx\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"184\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sigh. via: http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/pmmukjx<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>The drop in grades is inevitable.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>There are so many things you have to adapt to in university<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 whether it is living alone for the first time, balancing your social life, or dealing with the fact that \u201chamburger\u201d essays just don\u2019t cut it anymore. It would be absurd to assume that you are able keep up a 90%+ average in university in your first year, all while trying to adjust to a completely\u00a0new environment.\r\n\r\n<strong>The most important thing to remember is that this is not permanent. Your grades will get better<\/strong>, and eventually, with enough dedication, you will be able to bounce back and start receiving grades that you were used to getting in your high school days.\u00a0<strong>In first year you\u2019ll learn from your mistakes, and grow from them..<\/strong>.\u00a0<em>Can I have a mac with that cheese?\r\n<\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/id1xE2HF7xclc.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"262\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">via: http:\/\/i.minus.com\/id1xE2HF7xclc.gif<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>You\u2019ll learn the importance of time management<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 maybe you shouldn\u2019t go the Green Room if you have a final the next day?\r\n\r\n<strong>You\u2019ll learn the importance of taking courses that you\u2019re actually interested in<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 sure, if you take that botany class, you\u2019ll have Thursday AND Friday off, but do you even know what botany is?\r\n\r\n<strong>You\u2019ll learn that first-year grades are just that \u2013 first-year grades.<\/strong>\u00a0You still a few more years to improve your GPA, and be honest with yourself. Do you really think most grad schools will be rejecting you on the basis of your first year grades?
