In Silence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong>There is a new dimension beyond those known to U of T students.<\/strong> It is a dimension of sight and mind, but without sound. A wondrous land of study and contemplation. It think it\u2019s the altitude, like working on top of a mountain. Anyway, when I got there I saw a notice on the wall promoting these new Silent Zones. Of course, <em>I had to check them out<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_19781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19781\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/onesearch.library.utoronto.ca\/news\/looking-quiet-place-study-robarts-library-now-has-silent-and-quiet-zones\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19781\" alt=\"http:\/\/onesearch.library.utoronto.ca\/news\/looking-quiet-place-study-robarts-library-now-has-silent-and-quiet-zones\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/silent-zone.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/onesearch.library.utoronto.ca\/news\/looking-quiet-place-study-robarts-library-now-has-silent-and-quiet-zones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>There are a few different Silent Zones at Robarts Library<\/strong>. I visited each one to get the full experience. The first one is the Reading Room on the second floor, and I\u2019ll admit I was surprised when I first walked in . . .\r\n\r\n<strong>It was quiet.<\/strong> It was also pretty big. And it was packed. I had never been to the Robarts\u2019 Reading Room before, but at 4pm on Wednesday it was a popular place to be. I stayed only for a few minutes, mostly to scope out the vibe.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_19782\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19782\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/postgradproblems.com\/50-step-guide-to-sending-out-the-vibe-at-a-bar\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19782\" alt=\"http:\/\/postgradproblems.com\/50-step-guide-to-sending-out-the-vibe-at-a-bar\/ \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/scopethevibe.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/postgradproblems.com\/50-step-guide-to-sending-out-the-vibe-at-a-bar\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>The second floor Reading Room is designed for studying.<\/strong> Three rows of single person study-cubbies fill the middle of the room, with lots of four-seater tables set along the walls and across the windows. Each of the four-seater tables has a power plug built into the middle of it, which is pretty great for computers, tablets, phones (on silent!), and anything else, so <em>you'll always have power<\/em>!\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_19784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19784\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickmeme.com\/meme\/35r7pb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19784\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.quickmeme.com\/meme\/35r7pb\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/power.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/power.jpg 625w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/power-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/power-500x280.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.quickmeme.com\/meme\/35r7pb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>There is another Silent Zone on the third floor<\/strong>, in the Reading Room, right above the second floor with an overlooking balcony. I liked this room more than the last. There are three tall, bright windows in the corner that look out over St. George St., giving the whole room a good open feeling, like you could really work undisturbed and comfortable. And the only sound was the occasional . . .\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_19785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19785\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/01\/09\/quiet-office_n_4551290.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19785\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/01\/09\/quiet-office_n_4551290.html\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/sneeze.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/01\/09\/quiet-office_n_4551290.html<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>Then there was the Computer Lab on the fourth floor.<\/strong> Another place at U of T I had never visited. It\u2019s a fairly small room, but there are a lot of computers, and the walls are made of glass. Was it silent? No, not really. There was an instructor preparing to teach a class on one half of the room. But it was okay. <em>It was like most computer labs . . .<\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_19786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19786\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gifbase.com\/gif\/1705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19786\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.gifbase.com\/gif\/1705\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/03\/typing.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.gifbase.com\/gif\/1705<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>I got up to the 9<sup>th<\/sup> to 13<sup>th<\/sup> floors<\/strong>, and I was beginning to doubt the integrity of these <em>Silent Zones<\/em>. The 9<sup>th<\/sup> floor was already pretty quiet. How much less noise could people make? But as I rounded the corner towards the <em>Harbord Apex<\/em> and the designated Silent Zone, I all at once noticed a strange noise fill my ears. It was sudden and overwhelming . . .\r\n\r\n<strong>Silence.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>Yes, I kid you not.<\/strong> The Harbord Apex of the ninth floor of Robarts was utterly silent. There were students working and studying, but I couldn\u2019t even hear the keyboards. The only sound was the gentle hum of the ventilation, which might easily have been a calming breeze. Truly, I was <em>on top of a mountain<\/em>. It was nice. And I wrote my whole essay in a few hours.\r\n\r\n<strong>So, if you are walking around in Robarts Library,<\/strong> and you happen to feel a stilling sensation fill your ears, a sudden sense that you\u2019re standing on top of a mountain, then you may have just entered a <em>Silent Zone<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<strong>\u2018Til next time, stay diamond, U of T!<\/strong>\r\n\r\n- Stephen.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\n<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nThere is a new dimension beyond those known to U of T students.
