(Attack of the Appendix)"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong>So this happened, and now I can laugh about it.<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23laughUofT&amp;src=typd&amp;f=realtime\" target=\"_blank\">#laughUofT<\/a>) It started with a stomach-ache on Thanksgiving Monday. I must have eaten too much mashed-potatoes and apple-crisp. But the pain lasted overnight, concentrating on the lower right side of my abdomen, and by Tuesday afternoon it was even worse.\r\n\r\nI just knew it\u2014<em>Appendicitis<\/em>, my only weakness!\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/appendix-doodle.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18617\" alt=\"appendix doodle\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/appendix-doodle.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/appendix-doodle.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/appendix-doodle-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/appendix-doodle-400x300.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>After some thought, I decided to go see a doctor.<\/strong> The <a href=\"http:\/\/healthservices.utoronto.ca\/clinic-hours.htm\" target=\"_blank\">U of T Health Clinic<\/a> is down at <em>214 College Street<\/em>, and they prefer scheduled appointments. It was too far for me to walk (all hunched over and groaning), so I went to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/public\/programs\/hco\/options\/walkin.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario Clinic<\/a> on Bloor Street.\r\n\r\n<strong>The thing about Walk-in-Clinics:<\/strong> <em>Expect to wait.<\/em> Bring a book, a magazine\u2014your notes on how to solve world hunger\u2014because it\u2019s going to take a while.\r\n\r\n<strong>Of course, I brought nothing.<\/strong> So for nearly two hours I did nothing by writhe in gut-wrenching agony (No, I\u2019m just being dramatic). But seriously, it was <em>gut-wrenching agony!<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Oh, and don\u2019t forget your Health Card.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>At last I saw the doctor.<\/strong> She asked does this hurt and I said yes. Then she asked does <em>THIS<\/em> hurt and I said <em>YES!<\/em> So she wrote me an ultrasound referral for the hospital and sent me on my way.\r\n\r\nIt was twelve noon. I had tutorial at two o\u2019clock. The nurse sent me down to the Emergency Ward. And, once again, <em>I played the waiting game<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18620\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.snarksquad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/why3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18620\" alt=\"Source: http:\/\/www.snarksquad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/why3.gif\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/painface.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: http:\/\/www.snarksquad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/why3.gif<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nI was brought into <em>Emerg<\/em> a little after five o\u2019clock. My girlfriend arrived, which made everything better, and eventually I had an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X08SJFEBSxA\" target=\"_blank\">ultrasound<\/a> (skip to 2:10). Then the doctor came back with the results. <em>I had Appendicitis.<\/em> There were three options:\r\n\r\n&gt; Do nothing.\r\n\r\n&gt; Take antibiotics.\r\n\r\n&gt; Have surgery\r\n\r\n<strong>All of a sudden I had to make a decision.<\/strong> I had been following the advice and recommendations of professionals all day, but now they fell silent. The doctor was waiting for <em>me<\/em> to tell <em>him<\/em> what to do.\r\n\r\n<em>I chose surgery.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>Now I feel much better.<\/strong> I have three small scars, but the pain is gone. It\u2019s strange. Having to decide whether I needed surgery has become the most striking aspect of the whole experience. It was like I had graduated.\r\n\r\n<strong>I had to take responsibility for my own life!<\/strong> (Oh gosh, Steve, really?) Yes!\r\n\r\n<strong>As a student, I find it easy to take my actions for granted, to assume everything will work out fine in the end.<\/strong> But being a student is not unlike having surgery. Both are choices. Both have risks and consequences. And although you may feel rushed into them, both have the final purpose of helping you. <a href=\"http:\/\/grooveshark.com\/#!\/s\/I+Should+Live+In+Salt\/58McSY?src=5\" target=\"_blank\">Tough decisions<\/a> are with us at every turn. It's our job to make them responsibly.
