Luckily, the unofficial U of T <em>Essay Writing Dos and Don\u2019ts<\/em> is here to help. (Have essay advice? Share it <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23UofTessaytips&amp;src=typd&amp;f=realtime\" target=\"_blank\">#UofTessaytips<\/a>).\r\n\r\n<strong>In my second year I took the Innis College course<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca\/ofr\/calendar\/crs_ini.htm#JEI206H1\" target=\"_blank\">Writing English Essays<\/a>. An intermediate, hands-on course, I learned many skills and techniques of persuasive writing. Most useful, however, was the T.A.\u2019s suggestion that we all read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crockford.com\/wrrrld\/style.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Elements of Style<\/a> by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White (the author of <em>Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/em>). It\u2019s a little guidebook to clear, concise, stylistic writing, and I would highly recommend it!\r\n\r\n<strong>Now! An essay is a presentation of our thinking in words, and our thinking is constantly changing and developing.<em> We need time to get it clear.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: <em>Summarize or list facts. <\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18452\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/natgeo-gifs.tumblr.com\/post\/31358180042\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18452\" alt=\"http:\/\/natgeo-gifs.tumblr.com\/post\/31358180042\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/summarize.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/natgeo-gifs.tumblr.com\/post\/31358180042<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>Sometimes a summary of events may feel necessary<\/strong> to situate your arguments. I always ask my T.A. or professor about this. Most say that summaries are a boring, unneeded waste of words. Listing facts may also seem beneficial because it fills space. But a list of facts is not a developed argument. To write a good essay we must <em>try to show our thinking.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>Do:<\/strong> <em>Engage arguments.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18462\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/olympo.tumblr.com\/post\/9053065525\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18462\" alt=\"http:\/\/olympo.tumblr.com\/post\/9053065525\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/engager.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/olympo.tumblr.com\/post\/9053065525<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>This is easier than it sounds.<\/strong> Just about every subject has previously established arguments made by scholars and students in books, papers, and journals. Find these. Read them. Pick two or three that are pertinent to your thesis and discuss them. Agree or disagree. Explain why you think so-and-so\u2019s point is invalid, and then argue for your own ideas!\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>: <em>Plagiarize.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18451\" style=\"width: 348px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jalapenoandolive.tumblr.com\/post\/63381014971\/monday-via\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18451\" alt=\"http:\/\/jalapenoandolive.tumblr.com\/post\/63381014971\/monday-via\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/dont-plagairize.gif\" width=\"348\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/jalapenoandolive.tumblr.com\/post\/63381014971\/monday-via<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>Obvious! But also very serious.<\/strong> For academic, argumentative, critical writing there is no greater offence. <em>Just imagine doing it in person<\/em>: Some guy next to you says something brilliant, and when it\u2019s your turn to speak you simply copy what he said, but you claim it\u2019s your own idea. I don\u2019t think so.\r\n\r\n<strong>Do:<\/strong> <em>Analyze the particular. <\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18455\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/littleanimalgifs.tumblr.com\/page\/6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18455\" alt=\"http:\/\/littleanimalgifs.tumblr.com\/page\/6\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/anparticular.gif\" width=\"245\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/littleanimalgifs.tumblr.com\/page\/6<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>What do I mean? Find something small and work outwards.<\/strong> When I write an essay on a novel, I try to focus and build my arguments from particular passages that extend to broader themes within the book. For a history paper, I would centre my analysis on a particular event, person, or act, and draw outwards. <em>Small is big.<\/em> The particular argument informs the general assumption. <em>Try it!<\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t:<\/strong> <em>Bribe your professor or T.A.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18454\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18454\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/televandalist.com\/post\/43606450500\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18454\" alt=\"http:\/\/televandalist.com\/post\/43606450500\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/bribery.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/televandalist.com\/post\/43606450500<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>It just doesn\u2019t work.<\/strong> Money, chocolate, theatre-tickets, a bottle of 50-year-old scotch\u2014it\u2019s all been tried. Wise words. I always check with my professors about title etiquette. Some are traditionalists.\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t:<\/strong> <em>Lose sleep. <\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_18458\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18458\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cineraria.tumblr.com\/post\/55964955759\/sleepy-kitten-frida-youtube\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18458\" alt=\"http:\/\/cineraria.tumblr.com\/post\/55964955759\/sleepy-kitten-frida-youtube\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/10\/losesleep.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18458\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/cineraria.tumblr.com\/post\/55964955759\/sleepy-kitten-frida-youtube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>Handing in a late paper is not the end of the world.<\/strong> Nor is getting a B, or a C, or even a D. Sometimes we just get stumped and can\u2019t think anymore. During third year, Essay Alley hit me hard and I had to ask my professor for an extension. If it\u2019s necessary, DO IT. I talk about my stupid essay! And it helps.
