Finally"},"content":{"rendered":"Finally, it\u2019s back to school!<\/strong> (#firstdayjitters<\/a> if you are feeling nervous!) My first day is not until Wednesday, but I sincerely feel for all of you Monday\u2019ers. And I offer a nod of recognition to many Engineering students who went back to school yesterday.\r\n\r\n

Source: http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/books-are-my-life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nI still don\u2019t know what textbooks I need, but that\u2019s normal.<\/strong> Sometimes the required textbooks are listed in the course description, or my instructor may post an announcement on U of T Blackboard<\/a>, but most often I have to wait until the first day of class to receive my course syllabus.\r\n\r\nThen I go to the U of T Bookstore<\/a>\u00a0. . .\r\n\r\n\"U<\/a>\r\n\r\nI love the U of T Bookstore.<\/strong> But, if you\u2019re more the bargain hunter type<\/em>, the Discount Bookstore<\/a> on the south side of College St. could be what you\u2019re looking for. Not every textbook is cheaper, but it\u2019s certainly worth the time to browse and possibly save.\r\n\r\nThere is also the Toronto University Student Book Exchange<\/a><\/strong>. I have used Tusbe before to buy and to sell textbooks, and the experience was easy and great. You save money<\/em>, while directly financing the studies of other (starving) students.\r\n\r\nA final money-saving option is to ask around.<\/strong> Find your course\u2019s department and visit the undergraduate lounge<\/em> (most of them have one). Speak with other students, and ask if anyone has textbooks lying around. Sometimes people just give them away for free!<\/em>\r\n\r\n

In first year I had a 9:00 am class in AH<\/em>\u2014can you figure out what building AH is, and where it is on campus?\r\n\r\nIn addition to knowing the names of buildings<\/strong>, I\u2019ve found it useful to learn the streets of Toronto<\/em> that make up St. George campus.\u00a0For academic, extra-curricular, and personal activities, the zone from\u00a0Bloor St. to College St., between Spadina Ave. and Yonge St.<\/em>\u00a0is my home. I\u2019m a neighbourhood kid. I like to know the backstreets and short cuts. I like to know my way around.\"uoftstreets\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nAfter that, I will sit down at my computer and log in to U of T Portal<\/a><\/strong>. The online student resource is also called Blackboard<\/em>, which is what professors will likely call it, but they mean Portal and UTmail.\u00a0Portal is really useful, awesome, and important!\u00a0Assignments, study notes, and even tests can be found posted online.<\/em>\r\n\r\n

I also check my UTmail<\/em> for updates from my college and the wider university community. I know I say this a lot, but U of T is an ocean teeming with opportunities, and most of them get caught in our email accounts.\r\n\r\nFinally, I will close my computer, put away my maps, close all my textbooks, and relax<\/strong>. I will close my eyes and let my imagination come to life<\/em>.\u00a0Next week I return to school.
