Finally"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong>Finally, it\u2019s back to school!<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23firstdayjitters&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\">#firstdayjitters<\/a> if you are feeling nervous!) My first day is not until Wednesday, but I sincerely feel for all of you Monday\u2019ers. Last minute preparations loom on the horizon. <em>Coming in at #1 \u2014 <strong>BOOKS!<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_17890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17890\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/books-are-my-life\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17890\" alt=\"Source: http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/books-are-my-life\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/booksarelife.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/tagged\/books-are-my-life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<strong>I still don\u2019t know what textbooks I need, but that\u2019s normal.<\/strong> Sometimes the required textbooks are listed in the course description, or my instructor may post an announcement on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portalinfo.utoronto.ca\" target=\"_blank\">U of T Blackboard<\/a>, but most often I have to wait until the first day of class to receive my course syllabus.\r\n\r\nThen I go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/uoftbookstore.com\" target=\"_blank\">U of T Bookstore<\/a>\u00a0. . .\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/100943505220228470293\/about\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17891\" alt=\"U of T Bookstore\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/U-of-T-Bookstore.jpg\" width=\"752\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/U-of-T-Bookstore.jpg 752w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/U-of-T-Bookstore-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/U-of-T-Bookstore-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<strong>I love the U of T Bookstore.<\/strong> But, if you\u2019re more the <em>bargain hunter type<\/em>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discounttextbookstoronto.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Discount Bookstore<\/a> on the south side of College St. could be what you\u2019re looking for. Not every textbook is cheaper, but it\u2019s certainly worth the time to browse and possibly save.\r\n\r\n<strong>There is also the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tusbe.com\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto University Student Book Exchange<\/a><\/strong>. I have used Tusbe before to buy and to sell textbooks, and the experience was easy and great. You <em>save money<\/em>, while directly financing the studies of other (starving) students.\r\n\r\n<strong>A final money-saving option is to ask around.<\/strong> Find your course\u2019s department and visit the <em>undergraduate lounge<\/em> (most of them have one). Speak with other students, and ask if anyone has textbooks lying around. In first year I had a 9:00 am class in <em>AH<\/em>\u2014can you figure out what building AH is, and where it is on campus?\r\n\r\n<strong>In addition to knowing the names of buildings<\/strong>, I\u2019ve found it useful to learn the <em>streets of Toronto<\/em> that make up St. George campus.\u00a0For academic, extra-curricular, and personal activities, the zone from\u00a0<em>Bloor St. to College St., between Spadina Ave. and Yonge St.<\/em>\u00a0is my home. I\u2019m a neighbourhood kid. I like to know the backstreets and short cuts. I like to know my way around.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecf.utoronto.ca\/~radio\/contact.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17896\" alt=\"uoftstreets\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/uoftstreets.jpg\" width=\"557\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/uoftstreets.jpg 557w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/uoftstreets-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2013\/09\/uoftstreets-500x284.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<strong>After that, I will sit down at my computer and log in to <a href=\"https:\/\/weblogin.utoronto.ca\" target=\"_blank\">U of T Portal<\/a><\/strong>. I also check my <em>UTmail<\/em> for updates from my college and the wider university community. I know I say this a lot, but U of T is an ocean teeming with opportunities, and most of them get caught in our email accounts.\r\n\r\n<strong>Finally, I will close my computer, put away my maps, close all my textbooks, and relax<\/strong>.
