And as my second year of university wraps up, I\u2019ve been reflecting lately on what a truly amazing eight months it has been. I really made an effort this year to take advantage of opportunities to get active, and it has tremendously paid off. In first year, I think I used the AC once or twice. But ask me what I did this year, and I could tell you that I\u2026\r\n\r\n- <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2013\/02\/01\/teeing-off-with-the-president\/\">Golfed<\/a>\u00a0with President David Naylor at the Varsity dome\r\n- Learned how to fend for myself through <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/11\/30\/unleashing-your-fierce-side-wen-do-style\/\">Wendo<\/a>\r\n- Braved the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/11\/16\/cardio-queen-takes-on-the-scc\/\">SCC<\/a>\r\n- Played outdoor <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/11\/09\/my-intramural-experience\/\">intramural soccer<\/a> for my college team\r\n- <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/09\/28\/embracing-fall\/\">Biked<\/a> to and around campus\r\n- Attempted to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2013\/03\/15\/a-day-of-dance\/\">belly dance<\/a>\r\n- Found <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2013\/01\/25\/have-you-dropped-in-yet\/\">drop-in classes<\/a> that I love\r\n- Learned the basics of <strong>tennis<\/strong>\r\n\r\nReflecting back on all this and more, I can tell you that I really have noticed a change. I\u2019ve realized that my legs have gained more muscle and my upper body has become much stronger. I used to do almost nothing but cardio, but now that I\u2019ve started attending drop-in classes and using weights, I\u2019ve activated and toned new muscles all over my body. I can literally feel the difference in my strength and energy level, and it feels amazing. It\u2019s the reason I keep on keepin\u2019 on.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/97d049f526175a80b923e071a5009d75\/tumblr_mj180uZoRR1rmxltdo1_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/97d049f526175a80b923e071a5009d75\/tumblr_mj180uZoRR1rmxltdo1_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nI\u2019ve learned a lot through my experiences over the year, and there are a few things I would really like to pass on to you:\r\n\r\n<strong>It's not so\u00a0scary doing things on your own. <\/strong>Don\u2019t always wait until you have someone to go with to events and such.\u00a0I\u2019ve tried to coordinate work-outs with my friends and drag them out to events, but\u00a0it often doesn't work out\u00a0with our\u00a0conflicting schedules.\u00a0So now I've learned:\u00a0if I hear of an event\/activity that\u00a0really interests me, then I\u2019ll go, even if it means going alone. Honestly, I would not have tried half the things I did this year if I sat around waiting for someone to accompany me every time.\u00a0By putting myself out there, I met SO many\u00a0cool new people.\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t avoid an activity just because you think you \u201csuck\u201d at it. <\/strong>No one is there to judge your skill level. And if you never practice, then it\u2019s kinda hard to improve! So if you really want to try something new, then don\u2019t be intimidated by lack of ability. I suck at dancing, but I went out to a <a title=\"dance workshop\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/10\/26\/dancing-it-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">dance workshop<\/a> anyway and just did my best. No one laughed at me or gave me weird looks \u2013 the instructors and other dancers were happy to see I was interested and were really encouraging.\r\n\r\n<strong>Find something you actually like doing. <\/strong>Exercise shouldn\u2019t feel like this tedious chore that you dread doing every day. There are so many different ways to get active that there is no reason to force yourself to do something you hate. I personally still don\u2019t like the fancy weight machines, so I avoid them and use free weights instead. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2012\/12\/20\/ive-found-my-escape-whats-yours\/\" target=\"_blank\">Running<\/a> is my favourite form of cardio, so I do a lot of that. The reason I exercise is to feel great after, both physically and mentally. So be creative and find activities that make you feel the same way.\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 381px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/workoutmemes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/walking-out-of-the-gym.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/workoutmemes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/walking-out-of-the-gym.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It really does feel like this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nI hope that the experiences I have shared over the last eight months have helped you discover all that the St. George Campus has to offer when it comes to healthy active living. I\u2019ve had an amazing time and have met some wonderful people.
