{"id":16955,"date":"2013-03-28T14:00:27","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T18:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=16955"},"modified":"2014-09-09T09:42:09","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T13:42:09","slug":"keep-calm-and-carry-on-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2013\/03\/28\/keep-calm-and-carry-on-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep Calm and Carry On"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong><\/strong>It\u2019s that time of the year again\u2026 the dreaded exam period!\r\n\r\nAlthough final exams signal the end of the school year and the prospect of warmer days ahead, for many of us they may also signal the beginning of higher stress levels and potential anxiety.\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/04c4586e0916cd53286ea7bfa7414d07\/tumblr_inline_mjectqOI4N1r032sl.gif\" alt=\"image\" \/>\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, there\u2019s no cure-all solution to stress and anxiety, or specifically, exam anxiety \u2013 I know, it\u2019s disappointing to me too!\u00a0 But, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/greatist.com\/happiness\/23-scientifically-backed-ways-reduce-stress-right-now\">a variety of things<\/a> we can do to lower our stress levels so that we are able to cope effectively with the academic demands during this last month of school.\r\n\r\nOn cam<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/images\/ExamJam2.jpg\/image_preview\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/images\/ExamJam2.jpg\/image_preview\" width=\"139\" height=\"194\" \/>pus, St. Mikes is hosting Exam Jelly@Kelly on April 4<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 5<sup>th<\/sup> and Arts &amp; Science will be hosting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/exam_jam\">Exam Jam<\/a> on April 8<sup>th<\/sup> at Sidney Smith to help students de-stress and refresh just before exams begin.\u00a0 Although these events may not miraculously make all of your stress disappear, it\u2019s as close to a one-stop stress management shop as it\u2019ll get. Not only will there be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/exam_jam#fun\">fun activities<\/a> but there will also be an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/exam_jam#space\">open study space<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/exam_jam#review\">course review sessions<\/a>, and FREE food (and, who doesn\u2019t like free food when you're on a student budget?).\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/A9NqVD-CEAA5d8z.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" width=\"304\" height=\"231\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exam Jelly @ Kelly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nIn the name of combating exam stress and anxiety, I\u2019ve organized a de-stressing event in my residence as well.\u00a0 Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sja.ca\/Ontario\/CommunityServices\/Programs\/Pages\/TherapyDogServices.aspx\">St. John Ambulance<\/a>, I\u2019ve been able to get therapy dogs for the event!\u00a0 Having experienced first-hand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/health-and-fitness\/health\/to-reduce-student-stress-dalhousie-lets-the-dogs-in\/article5974216\/\">the calming effect<\/a> of playing and interacting with a therapy dog, I can certainly understand why this trend has virtually exploded across North American universities.\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fido.ca\/cms\/v45\/images\/360\/stjohnsdog.png\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.fido.ca\/cms\/v45\/images\/360\/stjohnsdog.png\" width=\"415\" height=\"298\" \/>Of course, a therapy dog may not be the solution to everyone\u2019s anxiety and let\u2019s face it not everyone has access to a therapy dog whenever they need or want it.\u00a0 But what\u2019s important is that these de-stress &amp; refresh events, regardless of the particular activities, show us the value in acknowledging our stress and then finding both healthy and effective coping strategies when attempting to deal with it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/6f\/Keep-calm-and-carry-on-scan.jpg\/220px-Keep-calm-and-carry-on-scan.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/6f\/Keep-calm-and-carry-on-scan.jpg\/220px-Keep-calm-and-carry-on-scan.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"329\" \/>\r\n\r\nFor me, the biggest take away message from these events is this:\u00a0 even though we all have numerous responsibilities, our first and most important responsibility is to ourselves and own health and wellbeing.\u00a0 By taking care of <em>numero uno<\/em>, we will be better equipped to take care of everything else \u2013 including those pesky exams!\r\n\r\nWhat do you do to de-stress &amp; refresh during final exams?\u00a0 Feel free to share them in the comments section!\r\n\r\n- Vivian","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\n<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nIt\u2019s that time of the year again\u2026 the dreaded exam period!
