{"id":15472,"date":"2013-01-10T21:32:03","date_gmt":"2013-01-11T02:32:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=15472"},"modified":"2014-09-09T09:55:54","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T13:55:54","slug":"do-what-makes-you-happy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2013\/01\/10\/do-what-makes-you-happy\/","title":{"rendered":"Do What Makes You Happy!"},"content":{"rendered":"Over the Winter Break, I did a lot of eating.\u00a0 And by a lot, I mean A LOT!\u00a0 At one point, I had eaten 5 dinners over 3 days.\u00a0 My stomach never ceases to amaze me.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/24.media.tumblr.com\/1980c7113ab52114476f23266fb6e48a\/tumblr_mgdg6nXpbR1r6shx3o1_500.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\r\nBut eating wasn\u2019t the only thing I did over the break.\u00a0 I used quite a bit of my free time \u00a0to do some much needed self-reflection -- just in time for the New Year.\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/b027e4bae57ee857ebea29e79a68f8ad\/tumblr_mgf9q79GaZ1rup1e9o1_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"260\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">My relationship with resolutions in a nutshell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s the catch, though: I\u2019m a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/commentary\/stop-me-before-i-resolve-again\/article6965996\/\">habitual resolution breaker<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, I break \u2018em as soon as I make \u2018em.\u00a0 Sound familiar, anyone?\r\n\r\nBut this year I decided to do something a little bit different and, instead, came up with a mantra: <strong><em>do what makes you happy<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 I was drawn to this idea because I wanted to come up with something that would not only help guide my life for 2013 but my future as well \u2013 what I want to do, and how I would like to grow.\r\n\r\nThe problem and beauty of this mantra is its encompassing broadness.\u00a0 Certainly, it \u00a0can seem vague and there are so many aspects to happiness.\u00a0 However, it is also all in the way we define it for ourselves.\u00a0 That being said, what better way to encompass the many goals and hopes I have for my time \u00a0left at U of T, and for my life in general?\r\n\r\nSo, <em>do what makes you happy.<\/em>\r\n\r\nBut what makes me happy?\u00a0 The short answer is an inexhaustible plethora of things, but I\u2019m going to try to list a few particularly important ones.\r\n\r\nOne of the things I\u2019ve really enjoyed this year is helping other students to make the most of their experience at U of T through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/Student-Resources\/First.htm\/\">a peer mentorship program<\/a>.\u00a0 Going into 2013 and the new term, I\u2019d like to spend more time getting to know my mentees better because it makes the mentorship experience (both for myself and mentees) that much more<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/12a0b8f02f31d483e6582532b04aa6e2\/tumblr_mg43x8Sky21qaobbko1_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"372\" border=\"none\" \/> enjoyable.\u00a0 To be honest, I am enjoying this experience so much, I wish I had utilized the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/\">Student Life website<\/a> earlier to find out about all the leadership and extracurricular opportunities available.\r\n\r\nOn a more academic note, being a fourth year student applying to grad school, I\u2019ve had to think very long and hard about my path going forward and to decide whether I\u2019m passionate enough about International Relations to pursue a Master\u2019s programme in it.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure there are some fourth years out there that can relate.\u00a0 But this kind of reflection over subject POSt choices is not limited only to fourth years.\u00a0 With first year students being required to choose their subject POSts in a few months, there will be a lot of thought and reflection required to choose a program that will hopefully spark your passion and interest.\u00a0 In either case, whether you\u2019re in fourth or first year, a visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/newstudents\/nextsteps\/contact\">the Registrar\u2019s Office<\/a> certainly doesn\u2019t hurt to get advice and support to pursue what makes you happy and sparks your academic passions.\r\n\r\nAnd so, here\u2019s to the pursuit of happiness.\u00a0 Not just in 2013, but for a lifetime.
