Each year as summer approached, I looked forward to the days of no alarms and lying in bed for as long as I felt like. A typical morning went something like this:\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/us13.memecdn.com\/When-You-Waking-Up-In-The-Morning_o_101453.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/us13.memecdn.com\/When-You-Waking-Up-In-The-Morning_o_101453.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nThis summer, however, I had to wake up around 6:30AM, five days of the week. Over time, I\u2019ve adjusted, and have actually come to prefer not only rising early, but exercising early as well.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i.chzbgr.com\/completestore\/12\/6\/26\/XVK2R_LkzUew1oyU5GKN8w2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.chzbgr.com\/completestore\/12\/6\/26\/XVK2R_LkzUew1oyU5GKN8w2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nAt this point you are probably thinking, \u201cWork out in the morning?!? Are you crazy?\u201d I used to feel the exact same way, and wondered how those early morning joggers could pull themselves out of bed without fail. But then last year I decided to try the early Super Circuit fitness class at Hart House, and I felt amazing after! \u00a0It was a combination of stepping, stretching, jumping,\u00a0and more \u2013 I was so busy moving to the upbeat music that the hour just flew by. After this, I realized I <em>could<\/em> physically get up and break a sweat in the early hours of the day, and that fitting in exercise into my mornings actually worked better for my schedule.\r\n\r\nSo before you ditch the idea, I encourage you to give morning workouts a chance! There are some great advantages to exercising before you start your day, and below I\u2019ve listed the ones that keep me at it:\r\n\r\n<strong>There are less people out in the morning.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThis is almost guaranteed. When I went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/harthouse.ca\/fitness\/drop-in-fitness\/\">7am Super Circuit<\/a> class at Hart House a few weeks ago, there were only five people participating, including me. If you like beating the crowd for a specific machine or don\u2019t feel comfortable in front of a lot of people, then hitting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physical.utoronto.ca\/FacilitiesAndMemberships\/Athletic_Centre\/Hours.aspx\">Athletic Centre<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/harthouse.ca\/fitness\/hours-of-operation\/\">Hart House Gym<\/a> in the morning is a really good idea. There\u2019s even less people (and fewer cars!) outside in the morning, so the air is cool, fresh and perfect for a stroll.\r\n\r\n<strong>Getting it over with early means more time for other priorities later.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThis is a big one for me \u2013 I always feel so great after finishing a task, whether it\u2019s a research paper or a morning jog. Waking up a bit earlier to fit in a workout, whether it\u2019s some yoga in your room or a swim at the <a title=\"Varsity Pool\" href=\"http:\/\/www.physical.utoronto.ca\/FacilitiesAndMemberships\/Athletic_Centre\/Facility_Descriptions\/Varsity_Pool.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Varsity pool<\/a>, lets you focus on other important things for the rest of the day. You can go to lectures, campus events, club meetings etc. feeling super fine because hey, you already got in your exercise for the day!\r\n\r\n<strong>AM exercise might just give you a boost of energy for the day. <\/strong>\r\n\r\nYou can find all kinds of articles and studies out there about the <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/15\/phys-ed-the-benefits-of-exercising-before-breakfast\/\">benefits<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3541400\/ns\/health-fitness\/t\/morning-exercise-may-help-sleep\/\">morning exercise<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MoveUofT\">MoveU<\/a>\u00a0crew here at U of T shares tons of tips for getting active and why it can help you be a better student. I certainly don\u2019t know all the nitty-gritty science behind it, but I can tell you that I really do feel more alert and my mind is clearer after working out in the morning. More energy to tackle the day with = bonus!\r\n\r\nAdding a morning routine can be a great way to incorporate regular exercise into a busy student lifestyle.
