Card that says I love you mom on it

Breakfast in bed, a bouquet of hand-picked flowers, a homemade card — showing appreciation for the mothers in your life is all about simple gestures of love. And what better expression of love is there than spending time with your family and creating memories that will last a lifetime? We’ve made a list of fun, affordable, and kid-friendly activities that you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Get the kids involved by letting them choose a silicone baking mold that will create unique shapes for their soaps! Another fun trick to personalize your soap is to find a small plastic trinket to place inside while the recipe solidifies, which you can find video instructions for here.

Make Art out of Your Family Photos

Love scrapbooking, but running out of shelf space? Luckily, there’s more than one way you can store those cherished family photos. Old pictures can be repurposed to decorate almost anything, from refrigerator magnets to decorative photo cubes.

If your kids like puzzles, you could spend the day creating your own out of a family portrait! For a classic puzzle shape, this simple tutorial reuses a cardboard cereal box and some mod podge gloss to make a customized photo puzzle. For a more out-of-the-box option, you could even create a puzzle out of any miscellaneous building blocks you might have lying around. Check out Jenae’s tutorial, where she uses Lego blocks to create puzzle pieces out of photographs of her kids.

Another idea for repurposing photographs is to create a memory jar. All you’ll need for this project is a spare glass jar, paint, a sticker label, and some pens and paper! After using a photograph to decorate your jar, you can take this project a step further by filling the jar with slips of paper with family memories written on them. Ask everyone in the family to write down their favourite memory together, and continue to add to the jar throughout the year. By next mother’s day, you’ll have a ton of memories to look back on!

Plan a Picnic in Your Backyard

With the warming weather, Mother’s Day might be the perfect time to plan a picnic and enjoy the outdoors with your family! If you have some outdoor space, picnicking can make an ordinary meal feel extra special. Plus, this is a great opportunity to change up your everyday mealtime routines.

The perfect picnic dish can be hard to master — light, portable, and tasty can be a difficult balance! For some fun recipe ideas you can make with your kids, check out these recipes for Nutella and banana rolls, pizza pockets, or a super simple two-ingredient bread roll.

Test out Your Green Thumb

Gardening shovel with soil in it

Gardening combines the benefits of spending more time outdoors with teaching your kids more about how to treat our planet and environment. If you don’t have an outdoor space of your own, there are still plenty of ways to bring some greenery into your life! One simple way to get your kids into gardening could be to grow an egg carton garden, reusing an old egg carton and letting it sit by a sunny spot on your window.

You could also consider creating a terrarium, which is a plant landscape that lives inside a glass container. Terrariums are super popular alternatives to gardens, as they are extremely easy to care for and also act as really unique pieces of living art! This could also be a great opportunity to teach your kids about the water cycle, as the plants live in an enclosed environment and water will condense and evaporate from the plants through transpiration. You can find instructions on how to create your own terrarium garden here.
