Near the end of every spring, for an entire afternoon, rows and rows of colourful tri-fold display boards would line the tables in our gymnasium. At a school that prioritized STEM education, electricity generated from potatoes and miniature volcanic eruptions \u2014 basic and overdone \u2014 were rare.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, I was less interested in biology, chemistry, or physics and more interested in how humans think, feel, and behave. <em>Is social media addiction real? How do we perceive beauty? And why might these differ from person to person?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was worried though: psychology was seen as a \u201cpseudoscience\u201d by some, and I didn\u2019t want to be \u201cless\u201d scientific than my peers. I wanted to hear my classmates\u2019 experiences, but peer testimony didn\u2019t seem like a proper method. A limited sample felt like a biased sample. And words didn\u2019t seem to have the same power as averages and trendlines.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, I collated and presented statistics from published studies on brain activity, heart rates, and reaction times. <em>Science <\/em>was about reliable, numbered data \u2014 or so, I believed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Quantitative Bias in Science&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/The-Quantitative-Bias-in-Science-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20488\" style=\"width:251px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/The-Quantitative-Bias-in-Science-1.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/The-Quantitative-Bias-in-Science-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/The-Quantitative-Bias-in-Science-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/The-Quantitative-Bias-in-Science-1-448x448.png 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the deal: Generally, quantitative research \u2014 gathering and analyzing numerical data \u2014 is seen as more reliable, replicable, generalizable, and objective without ambiguity or bias. In comparison, qualitative research \u2014 gathering and analyzing descriptive data \u2014 is seen as anecdotal and subjective at best, or unscientific and biased at worst.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So<s>,<\/s> when I entered university, I <em>very <\/em>hesitantly chose to major in psychology and sociology. Social sciences, with their use of qualitative research, are seen as less rigorous and less credible than the physical sciences; they\u2019re called \u201csoft\u201d sciences or denied belonging in science altogether. By also minoring in statistics, I felt I could \u201credeem\u201d myself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But at U of T, I soon came to learn that it wasn\u2019t that straightforward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantitative research <em>can<\/em> be biased. Psychology has been going through a replication crisis, meaning researchers have been unable to replicate the findings of many numerical-based behavioural studies. There are several reasons, but an interesting one is publication bias: as journals are incentivized to publish interesting, statistically significant findings, researchers might be too flexible with their data analyses to get such findings.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The so-called \u201chard sciences\u201d aren\u2019t immune to this either. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/533452a#change-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In one survey<\/a>, 77% of biologists and 87% of chemists surveyed said that they had tried and failed to replicate published research findings. So quantitative research isn\u2019t without its pitfalls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, isn\u2019t it quite funny to try to quantify people? Humans are diverse and complex. People&#8217;s psyches, whether on an individual or group level, cannot be explained simply through data points and trendlines.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People\u2019s stories matter. And if I was interested in finding a solution for people\u2019s issues, their stories need to be considered even if they&#8217;re not quantifiable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discovering Design Thinking&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Discovering-Design-Thinking.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20489\" style=\"width:269px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Discovering-Design-Thinking.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Discovering-Design-Thinking-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Discovering-Design-Thinking-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Discovering-Design-Thinking-448x448.png 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When I joined the Innovation Hub, or iHub, as a Blog Editor, I was curious about its emphasis on \u201cstudent-centred design thinking.\u201d I\u2019ve been taught that finding the right experimental or ethnographic design was the first step to finding the statistics or themes that best described the subjects of my interest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reverse idea \u2014 of research leading to design \u2014 was alien to me.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Design thinking, I soon came to learn, is the practice of making empathy-based observations and interviews to design programs and services that best fit human needs. Design thinking research is meant to be an exploratory and non-linear process in which depth is just as important as breadth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the qualitative data at iHub is collected through interviews with U of T students <em>by <\/em>U of T <em>students<\/em>. In design thinking, peer feedback isn\u2019t biased \u2014 it\u2019s exactly what\u2019s needed to foster a welcoming environment and gain genuine insights from students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2021, iHub has partnered with the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science in reviewing academic programs based on the University of Toronto Quality Assurance Process (UTQAP) criteria. This project gathers quantitative data in the form of surveys, and qualitative data in the form of student interviews. These insights, in turn, help inform the future of various Arts &amp; Science programs at U of T. Even at a high level, the university engages in design thinking processes that are made possible through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unlearning Assumptions&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Unlearning-Assumptions.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20490\" style=\"width:272px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Unlearning-Assumptions.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Unlearning-Assumptions-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Unlearning-Assumptions-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/innovationhub\/files\/2024\/08\/Unlearning-Assumptions-448x448.png 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As I move closer towards the end of my undergraduate studies, I\u2019m glad to have unlearned the assumptions I had about qualitative and quantitative research when I first began my post-secondary journey \u2014 and I\u2019m glad to have the opportunity to unravel them with you:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Social sciences are subjective, but that doesn\u2019t make them less scientific: <\/strong>Interpreting human behaviours can\u2019t be as straightforward as examining moving particles. Bias is bound to worm its way in, but keeping awareness of how one\u2019s personal biases can affect interpretations helps with maintaining a sense of objectivity.\u00a0As long as you\u2019re practicing empiricism \u2014 making external observations and not relying on internal reasoning \u2014 you\u2019re a scientist.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Qualitative data, even from a limited sample, <em>is <\/em>valuable: <\/strong>Qualitative data is meant to be exploratory, a springboard for further, focused research. From the data, we can create theories and keep building on or testing these theories as we gather more data.\u00a0And while small samples are considered non-generalizable or without \u201cstatistical significance,\u201d that\u2019s not what they\u2019re for. A small sample provides more time for skilled facilitators to get stories that get at the \u2018how\u2019 and \u2018why\u2019 behind interviewees\u2019 feelings and experiences.\u00a0<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Qualitative and quantitative research go hand in hand: <\/strong>Both methods are useful for different purposes, and when they come together, they can reveal a lot about the social world.&nbsp;In educational research, for example, qualitative research can examine student-teacher perspectives on a new teaching method, while quantitative research can evaluate its effectiveness through testing and scoring.
