Choir! Choir! Choir!: Singin’ in the City

So, I like to sing. I have since I was a wee one, and although never the greatest singer in the world, I don’t consider myself the worst either (this may or may not be due to an inflated sense of self-worth).  However, as we get older, the opportunities to sing dwindle and it’s just us and the shower, or ourselves belting out Celine Dion when the roomates are gone (alllll byyyyy myyyyseeeellllfff). Recently though, I caught word of a pretty cool thing that happens twice weekly in the city. That thing is called Choir! Choir! Choir!

Nearing it’s 2nd year anniversary come February, c!c!c! is a casual, non-committal choir that takes place at a bar for the fee of $5. All are welcome, and if you come once, or you come often, no one is going to judge you (that I know of). The group originally began on Tuesday nights at No One Writes to the Colonel, but has since expanded and added on a West-end Wednesday night at The Monarch Tavern. To be honest, word is spreading, and this choir is kind of a big deal – Bryan Adams even tweeted about it after hearing the choir’s cover of Run to You.

The deal is this: join the facebook group (this one or that one – request to join, you won’t be rejected), find out what songs are being done, listen to the songs on youtube, arrive and sing! Perhaps even more awesome, after the fact you can check out your performance on their soundcloud page, where their past recordings are posted.

I was a bit nervous as a first-timer so I found my “safe place” in the “mid” section of singers (melody anyone?). It doesn’t take long before you realize that everyone is in it to sing it, and by the end of the rehearsal, you may even be daring enough to mosey over to the “low” section to bust out some harmonies (much harder than melody, by the way). Basically, if you start out meek, by the time you’re on the streetcar home you are wondering why you ever stopped dreaming of that music career… or maybe that’s just me?
