In late 2020, Mentorship and Peer Programs within Student Engagement identified the unique challenges faced by students who were grappling with isolation and difficulty making connections in the virtual realm. Responding to this, Student Engagement introduced the Talking to New People Cohort Program – bringing together groups of eight students over four to five weeks, to forge connections. The program was so successful that versions for graduate students, international students and standalone workshops were launched in 2021.
In winter 2023, Accessibility Services built off Student Engagement’s success and adapted the programming exclusively for students living and studying with a disability for the four-week experience.
Twenty-five committed participants consistently engaged in the program. Feedback from the students highlighted its effectiveness in providing clarity, offering diverse activities and using thoughtful discussion prompts. Notably, the inclusion of speed networking and structured time for relationship-building received special commendation.
This success not only underscores the program’s efficacy but also emphasizes the commitment of Accessibility Services and Student Engagement to continually improve on and expand the initiative to address the specific needs of students.
