About Us

Project Mission Statement: The Sexual & Gender Diversity Office, Multi-Faith Centre, Accessibility Services, Family Care Office and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Office (AODA) will undertake a St. George campus washroom inventory in collaboration with Facilities & Services and Property Management. The purpose of this project is to provide clear and updated information about the range of U of T's current washroom facilities and to foster a safer and more inclusive campus community. The project will address four specific areas of interest: physical accessibility, single-user washrooms for broader gender inclusivity, baby changing stations and footbaths for Muslim students who wash before prayer. Who Are We? Mari Rossi mari pic I am the student intern representing the Family Care Office for the Washroom Inclusivity Project. As a student parent of two young children, I am well aware of the challenges encountered in bringing my kids on campus, and so I was delighted to join a project committed to increasing accessibility to student parents at U of T. I am completing my second undergraduate degree, this one as a Psychology Research Specialist with a minor in Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health. I also currently teach Mindful Parenting to students, staff and faculty through the Family Care Office. Being a part of WIP has allowed me to deepen my understanding of equity issues and my commitment to fostering inclusivity wherever I go. When I see a baby change station in a U of T washroom, whether or not my kids are with me, it signals that I am important to this community and that as a student parent, I am welcome here." John My name is John Debono and I am a 22 year old student finishing my last year at the University of Toronto in Cinema Studies and Political Science. I am excited to be a part of the Washroom Inclusivity Project because I see the University as a place where students reconsider their views of the world and think about ways  we can make the world a more welcoming place. I see this project as one of the ways that we can reach for that goal.  An exploration and breakdown of the facilities available will go a long way towards enhancing  everyone’s experience here at UofT and I am happy to be a part of this project. Khalid Khan WIP picture Hey there! My name is Khalid Khan, I'm a 4th year Political Science student here at the University of Toronto. I'm one of the amazing interns working on the Washroom Inclusivity Project, representing the Multi-faith needs on campus, hired by the Multi-Faith Centre. A little about me; I'm involved in various clubs and unions across campus. I've been avidly working with and for the Muslim Students Association, I am a Board Director for New College on the UTSU (UofT Students’ Union) Board of Directors, and I've also served 2 years for UTERN (UofT Environmental Resource Network). What interests me in the project? To me, and many other religiously practicing students, a washroom is much more then somewhere to use the toilet, to us it's also a place where we perform ablution before prayers. To us, it's where we feel safe while practicing our religion. I am a part of this project so I can help make UofT’s facilities known to students who need them, but also so we can all learn about each other's experiences and needs. Guin I am the intern representing the Sexual and Gender Diversity Office within the Washroom Inclusivity Project. I am also a student in my third year of a Sexual Diversity Studies Specialist undergraduate degree. This project has given me a chance to use the critical analysis of gender issues, particular those of transgender individuals, that I am developing as part of my degree in a practical context. I am excited to bring my point of view into a project that is important to so many other groups on campus.
