A writing workshop with BC writer Betsy Warland

November 19th, 2012 · No Comments

Betsy Warland’s
“Writing The Between”
Toronto Workshop
December 14th (eve) & 15th  (day)

This unique workshop is invigorating and illuminating for authors and emerging writers of all genres.

As writers, we are often faced with various kinds of betweeness. Although betweenness is typically considered to be something to avoid – the devil and the deep blue sea, between a rock and a hard place – it is actually a dynamic site from which to write; from which to deepen the narrating voice.

Betweenness can be between doubt and confidence, cultures, drafts, languages, time frames, genres, between writing projects or different art forms, between conflicting shared memories, identities, what we’ve written and are afraid to write, truth and fiction,

Betsy will establish a conceptual framework, use examples, and provide a series of exercises to enable you to identify and access the greater narrative potential to be found in writing into and out of the betweenness in your writing.

By design, space is limited. To insure your participation in the workshop – register early.

Cost: $150 per participant

Registration and payment deadline: November 30th, 2012

Location: Hart House, University of Toronto

Negative Capability: Finding Peace in a Busy World

Negative Capability: Finding Peace in a Busy World

Join us on November 19 at 7:30 in the Round Room at Massey College, at the northwest corner of the Quad.

John Keats called it  “ capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.”   A meditative moment, a work of art, nature: how do we free ourselves, however briefly, from the day’s demands, so that we may regenerate and restore our full capacity for humanity and compassion?  Two poets, Ronna Bloom and John Donlan explore their experience of literature and healing with moderator Dr. Allan Peterkin.

Today: everything changes

November 7th, 2012 · No Comments

Well, maybe not everything.

But if you’re on your way to the second session of “Am I? — A Writing Series about Identity and Change” the room location is changed for today only.

We’ll be in the South Sitting Room at Hart House. If you get lost, ask at the Hub.

Registration is closed because of the capacity of the room but will reopen for the last session where we will return to the lap of luxury in the East Common Room.
