Women in Leadership: Recognizing and Celebrating International Women’s Day

Women in Leadership: Recognizing and Celebrating International Women’s Day

WRITTEN BY: Atifa F. Karim Peer Leadership Advisor, Leadership Development

Each year the Leadership Development team, as part of UofT’s Division of Student Life, brings together students, staff, and faculty in a safe space for meaningful discussion about gender issues, female empowerment, and more in order to celebrate International Women’s Day. In a reflection piece from last year, Elo (the Mentorship Programs Intern last year) reflected on the format of the event was designed to do exactly this, writing:

“This conference was structured as a World Café where the attendees were able to engage in many different conversations with multiple facilitators from diverse backgrounds and experiences. As a facilitator, I had the opportunity to converse with many of the attendees about their understanding of how women have been marginalized in the public sphere. This event was fundamental in providing a space for students, staff and faculty to start to unpack their own experiences in order to understand how they can move forward as women with many different intersectionality’s.”

I’d recommend you read the rest of Elo’s insightful reflection available here

This year, the IWD (International Women’s Day) campaign theme is #PledgeforParity, and next week’s event by our Leadership Development team is appropriately titled “Women in Leadership: Inspiring Social Change”.

We hope you’ll consider joining us for some meaningful conversation and personal reflection.
