TED Talk Thursday: John Wooden on The Difference Between Winning and Succeeding

Coach John Wooden speaks about how you can inspire people to look for something more than achieving higher grades or winning at a sports event. He wanted to come up with a new definition of what is deemed as success, one that goes against the common societal view that winning is equivalent to succeeding. He coined his own definition of success, it is something that you achieve as you reach a state of mentality knowing that you did the best you can with what you are capable of doing. It is important to understand that your reputation is what you perceive yourself to be. He starts the Ted Talk by recalling what his father had taught him. His father had always said to “ never try to be better than someone else, always learn from others”, as a child the importance of these words were never looked into by him, but as time had passed he realized the truth behind them. With more examples, and beautiful poetry this makes for an enlightening Ted Talk, that redefines the meaning of success.
