{"id":48830,"date":"2023-09-21T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=48830"},"modified":"2023-09-20T09:40:01","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T13:40:01","slug":"how-i-take-care-of-myself-during-the-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2023\/09\/21\/how-i-take-care-of-myself-during-the-school-year\/","title":{"rendered":"How I take care of myself during the school year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My first few weeks of a semester tend to go relatively smoothly \u2014 most lectures cover introductory materials, like the syllabus and reviews of basic concepts, and I have enough time to do the things I like besides school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, come October\/November, when midterms start being scheduled back-to-back, basic day-to-day tasks, like eating on time or exercising, seem to become an \u2018option\u2019. I used to be that student, and I suffered miserably. While the University of Toronto consists of rigorous programs, a lot of the pressure on us comes from ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, how did I go from not prioritizing the balance between health and academics to finally understanding that health is my first priority?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><em>Being on track with lectures and assignments<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I get it \u2014 9 a.m. lectures are a commitment, and waking up early, especially for commuters, can be very stressful. Missing 1\u20132 lectures due to emergencies is alright. But the more often you go, the lesser the chances are of you studying last minute or procrastinating 'til you are forced to pull all-nighters to catch up.<br><br>I cannot emphasize enough how much of the \u2018studying\u2019 is done within a lecture itself. More often than not, you are writing notes as a form of active learning. Although my instinct is to stay in my bed under the covers and just hibernate, I would advise against it. While it\u2019s hard to go on a walk outside, you can go to a 24\/7 commercial gym near you or make use of <a href=\"https:\/\/recreation.utoronto.ca\/\">U of T\u2019s wide range of physical recreation classes<\/a> across all three campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From yoga to weightlifting and swimming, there are limitless opportunities! This will make your day predictable and less uncertain, giving you more leeway to spend time unwinding.<br><br>This ties in with your sleep cycle. I began using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.risescience.com\/blog\/what-is-sleep-debt#:~:text=Acute%20sleep%20debt%3A%20This%20is,up%20over%20months%20and%20years.\">this app<\/a> that keeps track of my \u2018sleep debt\u2019. It tracked how much sleep I had lost over a period of 14 days. Too much sleep debt = not enough energy and focus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adopting ways to either help you go to sleep earlier or stay in bed for longer periods can be helpful, such as turning the lights off or having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axolight.us\/what-color-light-helps-you-sleep\/#:~:text=Research%20studies%20discovered%20red%20to,suitable%20for%20lighting%20a%20bedroom.\">red light to increase the production of melatonin.<\/a> Lowering the temperature of my room before sleeping also ensures I don\u2019t wake up in the middle of the night.
