Usually, I promise myself that I\u2019ll read a novel over the break but that never happens. So, I decided I would compile a list of some short story recommendations to read over the holidays instead. I love short stories because I feel accomplished after reading them without having had to dedicate my time to an entire novel. They\u2019re great to read in one sitting and, once I get to the end, I still get the feeling that a piece of literature has changed my life in some way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a list of some of my favourite short stories. I made my choices based on what was available online for free! There are a few that I haven\u2019t given a link to but they are definitely available online through the public and U of T library systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1948\/01\/31\/a-perfect-day-for-bananafish\">The Perfect Day For Bananafish<\/a> by J.D. Salinger&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>My favourite short story of all time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Spring Song of the Frogs by Margaret Atwood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4325-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Spring Song of the Frogs first page.\" class=\"wp-image-43326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4325-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4325-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4325-1-448x448.jpg 448w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4325-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A lot of people have different opinions on Atwood, but I think her short stories are her best works, the one I\u2019ve recommended doesn\u2019t get as much attention as some others.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. <a href=\"http:\/\/gutenberg.net.au\/ebooks06\/0605131h.html\">The Mysterious Mansion<\/a> by Honor\u00e9 de Balzac <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4324-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Horror story collection front cover.\n\" class=\"wp-image-43327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4324-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4324-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4324-1-448x448.jpg 448w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2020\/11\/IMG_4324-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A lovely little story about an abandoned mansion. Some qualify this as horror, but it\u2019s more the \u2018tragic\u2019 kind rather than the \u2018scary.\u2019<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinylcafe.com\/storyex-galleria\">The Vinyl Caf\u00e9<\/a> by Stuart McLean <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>This is a link to every story ever told on the CBC radio broadcast the Vinyl Caf\u00e9! They are little episodes that follow the same characters (sort of like the Simpsons.) If you enjoy listening to stories rather than reading I highly recommend listening to them here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/listen\/live-radio\/1-71-vinyl-cafe\">https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/listen\/live-radio\/1-71-vinyl-cafe<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/literaryprizes\/past-cbc-literary-prize-winners-1.4096061\">CBC Short Stories<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Every year the CBC hosts a short fiction contest, all the winning stories are available to read on their website!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8.
