Initially hesitant, my nerves were calmed when I saw one of my classmates (Haley) who I share three classes with, but never really spoke to. We chose our yoga mats and sat down next to each other, in silence of course.\r\n\r\n<strong>Checking In with our Bodies<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_36524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36524\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/GetFileAttachment-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36524 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/GetFileAttachment-5.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Banerjee sitting \" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/GetFileAttachment-5.jpg 600w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/GetFileAttachment-5-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Banerjee &amp; the bells (creds: Mindful moments)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n*ding*\r\n\r\nDr. Susitna\u00a0Banerjee facilitated this first session of guided meditation with Tibetan bells that acted as signals if we chose to close our eyes. I think I fell asleep for at least 5 minutes while she calmly guided us to check in with every part of our body from toe to head. I wouldn't say I'm sleep-deprived but the quality of the sleep I get feels sub-optimal from always being in GO-GO-GO mode.\r\n\r\n*ding*\r\n\r\n<strong>Mindful Yoga<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_36465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36465\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/tumblr_ng29t6gcqh1s5m2u3o3_500.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36465\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/tumblr_ng29t6gcqh1s5m2u3o3_500.gif\" alt=\"mulan scene in sync army\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">what I thought we looked like minus the sticks (cred: rebloggy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nSimilar to <a href=\"http:\/\/harthouse.ca\/fitness\/drop-in-fitness\/\">Hart Houses' drop-in Flexibility Fusion<\/a>\u00a0in which we focused on our breath, Melissa, a yoga instructor guided us to lead our body through stretches we often deprive our bodies of. Feeling it, thinking about where it came from, who planted it... I did that with a raspberry, and the texture was so weird. Eating mindfully instead of wolfing down food just because it was in front of me helped my body register when it was full and when to stop.\r\n\r\n<strong>Mindful Walking<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_36483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36483\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/72f02440701089.57894e458a58b.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36483\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2018\/11\/72f02440701089.57894e458a58b.gif\" alt=\"gif of person walking\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">slow &amp; steady (cred: behance by Nina Reichenberg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nWe paced our yoga mats - one step at a time. It felt as though I was learning how to walk again. I tried maximizing the surface area of my feet as I propelled myself through each step. This evenly-paced walking is something I want to implement between classes so that I don't arrive to lectures frazzled.\r\n\r\n<strong>Compassion and Loving-Kindness Meditation<\/strong>\r\n\r\nI cried. In a room of strangers (silent retreat = small talk not encouraged), I cried. I know it may be flu-season but I heard sniffles throughout the room so I knew I wasn't alone. Thomas, a fourth-year student, who facilitated the mindful walking guided us in picturing a version of ourselves that we felt most real in situations with people that we cared about and then to repeat affirmations to ourselves that really resonated with me. We then did the same by thinking about someone we care about and also someone we don't see eye-to-eye with.
