{"id":23891,"date":"2015-03-30T10:59:33","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T14:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/?p=23891"},"modified":"2015-03-30T10:59:33","modified_gmt":"2015-03-30T14:59:33","slug":"planning-to-procrastinate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/2015\/03\/30\/planning-to-procrastinate\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning to Procrastinate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have never felt so emotionally attached to an e-card as the one you see below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/procrastination.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23892 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/procrastination.jpg\" alt=\"procrastination\" width=\"460\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not only do I feel like this victorian lady is my spirit animal, but I also feel as if I may have actually written this e-card subconsciously, and am now just re-discovering it for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">My name is Rachael, and I am a professional procrastinator.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve always been fully aware of my procrastination habits - even in high school I was a night-before essay writer. At\u00a0university I\u2019ve definitely met some procrastination pros who surpass even me, but I\u2019ve also met hundreds of people who plan and perfect things weeks in advanced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I always use to compare myself to these people. <em>They must be getting such better marks than me. Their lives are probably so stress-free. THEY MUST BE LITERALLY PERFECT AND I WANT TO BE THEM IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_23894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23894\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23894 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My preferred form of procrastination is Netflix, coffee, and painting my nails<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But over the last semester,<strong> I\u2019ve learned that I\u2019m not just a typical procrastinator. No, I actually plan to procrastinate<\/strong>. I know that may seem like an oxymoron, but it really is true. I am the most organized last-minute procrastinator you will probably ever meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If I have an essay due on Monday, I will make sure I\u2019ve done all my research by Friday, and I will spend all day Saturday and Sunday locked in ROBARTS creating in depth outlines and rough copies. By 8pm on Sunday night - I will have a perfect (at least to me at the time) essay ready to be handed in the next morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-23895\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image11-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"image1\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image11-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image11-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2015\/03\/image11-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">More important than this realization however, was the realization that maybe this is okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Procrastination has such an awful stigma attached to it. The entire internet is filled with procrastination memes and 2am Facebook posts by stressed out students. They contribute to this idea that procrastination is an inadequate and unacceptable form of studying.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>I know that there are hundreds of research projects out there that tell you all the reasons why procrastination is bad for your mental health and your grades, there are actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3025930\/work-smart\/6-reasons-to-embrace-procrastination\"><span class=\"s2\">quite a few out there who say that procrastination isn\u2019t as bad as we make it out to be<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sure, if you\u2019re skipping deadlines and missing assignments, your procrastination is getting a bit out of control. But if you find that you\u2019re actually able to produce your best work when you procrastinate, and it\u2019t not affecting your physical or mental health, then who am I (or the Internet) to tell you that you\u2019re doing it wrong?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When I eliminated the stigma around my procrastination - I found I was actually able to produce better results, and be less stressed in the process.<\/strong> I didn\u2019t feel like I was doing something wrong, or like I had \u201cplanned to fail, by failing to plan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead, I would sit down and set out a timeline of my procrastination. I would re-schedule my time, knowing that I was going to spend the entire weekend in the library. Overall, I think this has actually made be a better - and certainly happier - student.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>What\u2019s your option on procrastination?
