Why does it have to be \u201ctrashy?\u201d <strong>Why can\u2019t I like \u201ctrashy\u201d things without it being ironic<\/strong>? Why can\u2019t I genuinely enjoy TV shows like <em>Keeping Up With the Kardashians<\/em>?\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/37.media.tumblr.com\/a106d4d1fb6eba338c8a7aa9716e3b39\/tumblr_moeqbcK0Ly1rhc3cao2_500.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kim understands me! via: keepingupwiththegifs.tumblr.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nI won\u2019t lie \u2013 I am definitely a millennial. There\u2019s no question that TV had a huge part in raising me in a household where both my parents worked. But you know what? I am thankful.\r\n\r\nI am thankful for the influence TV made on me as I grew to become an adult.\r\n\r\nI can understand anything and everything people are talking about; I am delighted that I can be a walking <em>Encyclopedia Brown<\/em> for episodes of <em>the Jersey Shore<\/em>; I am more than proud that I can recite to \"Pok\u00e9rap\" word-for-word.\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xMk8wuw7nek?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n\r\nBut more than anything \u2013 <strong>I am thankful that TV raised me to have a sense of humility<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_20223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20223\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/06\/5758_10152945566145182_1310452713_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20223 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/06\/5758_10152945566145182_1310452713_n.jpg\" alt=\"Maybe a little too much.\" width=\"600\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/06\/5758_10152945566145182_1310452713_n.jpg 600w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/06\/5758_10152945566145182_1310452713_n-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.studentlife.utoronto.ca\/lifeatuoft\/files\/2014\/06\/5758_10152945566145182_1310452713_n-401x300.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maybe a little too much?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nThat\u00a0is something that was crucial to me surviving university. It\u2019s clich\u00e9, but true. You can\u2019t go through the entirety of university without it, that\u2019s just a recipe for disaster. Much like those microwavable mug cakes \u2013 it seems like a good idea, but in the end, all you really end up with is poop that tastes sort of like chocolate\u2026 I think that was a metaphor.\r\n\r\n<strong>Why does it matter that you enjoy watching Paris and Nicole's shenanigans on\u00a0<em>The Simple Life<\/em>? That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t also enjoy literature written by Judith Butler<\/strong>. Always remember that binaries are just social constructs in the end; just because you like something \u201cquestionable\u201d doesn\u2019t make you, yourself, inadequate.\r\n\r\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/24.media.tumblr.com\/f01045dddb5a403dd140e0a6d5b4422a\/tumblr_myv1ekKVWE1shxe70o1_400.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Always remember that it's the 90s. via: allie-rva.tumblr.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\nIf you take yourself too seriously, you are setting yourself up for disappointment (and even worse, parental disappointment!).\u00a0 Take some time out to enjoy things you genuinely like, despite what others may think. For me, it\u2019s participating in cheesy, \u201ctasteless,\u201d and nostalgic media, but maybe for you it\u2019s crocheting? You are not any less intelligent because you enjoy the <em>fine<\/em>r things in life\u00a0\u2013 and by\u00a0<em>finer<\/em> things I mean<strong> anything and everything that brightens up your day. <\/strong>Be unapologetic about it; there's nothing wrong with that.<strong>\r\n<\/strong>\r\nEven though people may disagree, in the end, you are your own agent. You made it to the University of Toronto, so, there\u2019s no doubt you\u2019re a smart cookie.
