Well… it’s that time of year again… Time to file your taxes. Sigh. Taxes - one of the only two things are are said to be sure in life. I write this live from my apartment, as I simultaneously juggle finishing this week’s post and gather all of the paperwork that I need in order to file my taxes.
Taxes have to be filed by the end of April. Some of you are adept enough to do the entire thing for yourselves - you purchase your tax-filing software, gather your documents, go through everything meticulously, and voila! Done! But for the rest of us who aren't sure that we can confidently file on our own - and for those of us who simply don't have the time to do it ourselves - getting professional help is always a great option. There are a lot of tax prep places around the city that can usually run you between $40 to $60 to file your taxes for you. But are you aware that there is help available on campus to assist you with filing your taxes?
The UTSU (University of Toronto Students’ Union) is offering a free tax clinic to make this chore a lot less chore-some. Key word here folks, is FREE.
The first step is to gather all of your documents from the previous year: photo I.D., OSAP loan documents, grant letters, old TTC metro passes, rent receipts, pay stubs, etc. For a detailed list of the items you should bring in to the tax clinic, click here.
Next, you'll need to make an appointment with the tax clinic, and bring in your documents. Appointments are available between 10am and 4 pm daily, but you’ll need to book a week in advance. They’ll sit with you and go through your documents, asking a few questions for clarification, and Presto! Your taxes will be electronically filed. All that will be left to do is to sit back and await that (hopefully) generous refund!!!
The UTSU tax clinic is held throughout the month of April at their office, located at 12 Hart House Circle. You can contact them at 416-978-4911 extension 244. Happy filing!!!
