June 2024
By K. Karbasy, Family Care Office/ Faculty Relocation Services Education and Communications Coordinator, University of Toronto
In the month of June, we celebrate Pride Month, a time dedicated to honouring the history, achievements, and resilience of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Pride Month is about celebrating diversity and inclusion and fostering a sense of community and solidarity. At the University of Toronto, with our three vibrant campuses—St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga—we recognize the importance of creating environments for everyone, including families. This blog post highlights a range of family-friendly Pride events in our community throughout June 2024.
The Importance of Pride Month
Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. Over the years, it has evolved into a global celebration that includes parades, festivals, educational events, and more. Pride Month allows many to express their true selves, promote equality, and stand against discrimination. It also serves as an educational moment for allies to learn about and support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Family-inclusive Pride events are crucial in teaching children about diversity, acceptance, and love. They provide a space for 2SLGBTQIA+ families to celebrate together, creating memories and fostering a sense of belonging. Here are some wonderful family-friendly events to enjoy this Pride Month across Toronto and the GTA:
