Elementary School Registration in Peel Region 2018-2019

Calling all Peel Region residents!

Here are a couple of things you may want to consider when deciding where you want your child to begin their education in the Peel region. First, remember that if your child will be 4 years old by the end of any year (December 31), they are eligible for Junior Kindergarten (JK) starting in September of that year. That means that if your child was born in 2014, they will be able to begin Kindergarten in September 2018.

There are three main steps you’ll need to complete in order to register your child in school in Peel.

#1 There are two school board options in Peel, the Peel District School Board, and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Your first step is to decide which one is right for your family and for your child!

# 2 Once you’ve decided on the school board, you’ll need to find your local school – either  public schools or Catholic public schools. 

* If you are new to Ontario or Canada, the Peel District School Board has Welcome Centers in Brampton, Malton, and Mississauga to welcome your family to Peel and help  you get your children registered for school. Call 905-366-8791 to book an appointment at the location that is most convenient for you.

The Welcome Centres are open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., all year round. Families can get assistance from staff in many languages. 

#3. Once you select your local school, you should begin the registration process. 

When? Registration opens in January.

This year, Peel District School Board’s Kindergarten Registration Week runs: January 29th – 31st from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, February 1st from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm and from 5:00 – 8:00 pm, and February 2nd from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. During this time, you can attend special activities at your child’s local public school.

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board‘s online registration opened on January 8th. In-person registration takes place on January 15th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and January 17th – 19th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

It is always a good idea to visit the school you are selecting ahead of time; making a first contact with the teachers and staff at the school is a good way to facilitate your child’s integration into their new environment.

How? Here is a checklist of what you’ll need to register your child:

Peel District School Board Proof of your child’s age.

Proof of address.

Proof of custody.

Immunization record.

Dufferin-Peel Catholic Board Registration form.

A proof of your child’s age.

Original Catholic baptismal certificate for child and/or parent/guardian.

Updated immunization record.

Proof of Canadian citizenship.

Proof of address.

Proof of English Separate School Support.

Both school boards in the Peel region offer specialized education programs that you might be interested in checking out.

FRENCH PROGRAMS: If your child’s first language is not French, and you would like her/him to learn it, then it is worth taking a look at the French Immersion and Extended French programs offered in both school boards. Have in mind that not all schools offer the program, so it is a good idea to enroll your child in a school that offers the program starting in Kindergarten.

  • Public Education: The French Immersion program is available for kids starting Grade 1. If your child will be starting Grade 7 in September, the Extended French program is available. Here you can get more information about the program. The deadline to apply for grade 1 French Immersion and grade 7 Extended French for the 2018-2019 school year is Friday, January 26th at 4:00 pm.
  • Catholic Public Education: The French Immersion program offered by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District starts in Grade 1. Students in this program will spend 90% of their day learning in the French Language. Online registration for French Immersion is available from January 15th – February 11th.

SPECIAL EDUCATION. If your child has special needs, both public and Catholic-public schools can offer programs and supports to help him or her succeed.

  • Public Education. If your child has a developmental disability, physical disability, hearing or vision loss or a ASD/PDD diagnosis, she or he may require specialized support in the school setting. For information about this planning process, call 905-890-1010/1-800-668-1146 ext. 2345. To prepare for registration, download the Planning for Entry to School Form and bring it with you when registering your child for school.
  • Catholic Public Education. Schools in the Catholic school board provide a spectrum of programs and services to meet the needs of all students. Check out the Parent’s guide to Special Education form for more information.
