Keeping Busy on PA Days

There’s no feeling quite like being a kid and anticipating an upcoming PA Day. For parents, however, the thought of having to make arrangements around this can often bring about more feelings of stress than excitement. (After all, parents deserve a break, too!)

The first PA Day for the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board is Friday, October 6th. In order to alleviate some of your stress, and to ensure that this PA Day will be enjoyable for the entire family, we’ve compiled a list of day camps and family-friendly activities.

On Campus

The U of T St. George campus has a variety of events that are open to all ages and that have no entry fee. At the Art Museum, community members are welcome to visit both the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House and the University of Toronto Art Centre at University College, which are conveniently located across the road from each other. The primary focus of these visual spaces is to promote the knowledge about the rich history of art. On Fridays, the gallery is open from 12:00 – 5:00 PM.

Also located at Hart House are drop-in tours. On Friday October 6th from 12:30 – 1:30 PM, students, staff, and community members are invited to take a free guided tour of the facility, which will offer a closer look at programmes, events, and services offered by this hub of U of T life.

Across the GTA

Evergreen and ROMKids are certainly two kid favourites! Evergreen offers a day camp for kids between the ages of 6 and 12 from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with extended care available from 3:30–5:30 PM. Campers will have the opportunity to explore the greener side of Toronto by hearing stories, tracking animals, and building forts.

For kids aged 5 to 14, the ROM offers themed day camps from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, with the option of extended care until 6 PM. These camp days provide full supervision through an array of educational activities, creative projects, and science experiments. The upcoming theme is “Blast from the Past!”, where children will get the opportunity to learn about ancient civilizations.

Near the U of T Mississauga campus, The Riverwood Conservancy is hosting Hike, Riverwood! from 9:00 AM -10:30 AM. This free event is open to all and is a nice way to get some fresh air in the great outdoors! The hike is led by a tour guide and maintained at a leisurely pace.

With so many fun options to choose from, what will you end up doing this PA Day?
