Natural Finger Paints

At one of our workshops for Students with Family Responsibilities (they’re great, you should come!), a mother asked me about eco-friendly finger paints. As I told her, why look to buy when you can make them so easily!

Here’s a ridiculously simple recipe that uses colors from natural ingredients!

Natural Finger Paint

1 1/2 C water

1/2 Cup corn starch

Natural coloring (see below)

Get an adult to bring the water to boil in a large saucepan. Get an adult to dissolve the  cornflour in a little cold water and add to hot water, stirring constantly. Boil until clear and thick (about one minute). Add color.

There are so many natural things you can use for colors. Add a tsp. of tumeric for yellow. Mash a handful of raspberries for red/pink or a handful of blueberries for purple. A little beet juice will add a vibrant purple, spinach can do green. There are lots of natural things to experiment with for colors!

This natural recipe is great for small children who still can’t keep their fingers out of their mouths or those kids who are prone to smear themselves with paint!
