About the Role

The Graphic Designer & Communications Assistant creates all the digital communications content for the Innovation Hub. The role includes original graphic designs for reports, presentations, and digital communications channels. The role may also include website design, blog writing, photography, and videography. The Graphic Designer & Communications Assistant workunder the direction of the Communications Coordinatorbringing to life content produced within project teams using visual imagery, media, and infographics. This role involves creating professional reports and presentations of design research data, iconography, promotional materials, blog posts, website content, and more. The role may also entail special projects, developing creative materials outside of the scope of design research projects. An important note: at the Innovation Hub we have a full graphic design process where all of our visuals are original designs. We start with mood boards and move to sketching and eventually digitizing using Figma and Adobe Illustrator. Experience or familiarity with Figma and Adobe Illustrator, as well as a graphic design portfolio, are required for this role. 

Job duties include:  

  • Create original graphic designs for reports, presentations, and digital communications channels using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Figma 
  • Develop visual imagery, media, and infographics to bring to life content produced within project teams 
  • Create professional reports and presentations of design research data 
  • Design iconography and promotional materials 
  • Write blog posts and create website content 
  • Support photography and videography projects as needed 
  • Develop creative materials for special projects outside of design research projects 
  • Follow the Innovation Hub's full graphic design process from mood boards to sketching to digitizing 

Qualifications:  

  • Strong communication abilities to share creative ideas and understand others’ creative ideas about how to translate abstract concepts into visual imagery 
  • Demonstrated ability to organize one’s own work and manage tight and often competing deadlines 
  • Collaborative and iterative mindset to approach unique problems, keeping in mind the audience with the ability to receive and apply constructive feedback 
  • Working knowledge of creating accessibility documents and visual materials 
  • Experience using design software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Figma 
  • Experience with multimedia content creation such as photography, videography, and creative writing 
  • Experience designing webpages using WordPress or equivalent website software 
  • Positive energy, enthusiasm, adaptable, and imaginative 
  • Desire to enhance the student experience at U of T  
  • Responsible and reliable 
  • Portfolio submission is required for applying to this role 

Assets

  • Working knowledge of design thinking and human-centred research 
  • Experience prototyping and building webpages 
  • Experience writing blog content and promotional materials 
  • Working knowledge of designing imagery intended for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.) 
  • Photography, videography, and video editing skills (i.e., Adobe Lightroom, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, etc.) 
  • Access to a camera and production equipment

Job Details

  • Contract Length: May 2026 to August 2026
  • Hours: 6-8 hours per week, in-person 
  • Wage: $17.60/hour
